George Ferguson column: I'm ready, it's almost game time

Sure it's been hot lately. But that still doesn't make up for a lousy summer in which the weather hasn't cooperated, the Cubs and Tiger Woods are both terrible, and my golf game has been even worse.

Bring on the fall. I'm more than ready for it. I'm ready for football season. I'm ready for volleyballs to fly. I'm ready for the buzz of another busy fall of sports on the Hi-Line.

Normally, I don't wish summer away. But did summer ever come?

It must have, since I sat in the stands on many a day at Legion Field watching baseball. And it must have, because I did hit the links here and there. But it sure didn't feel like summer ever came, and with the exception of Havre's heat wave the last two weeks, it might just have well of been spring from April to August.

But now that Blue/White games have been held, now that Northern volleyball has a win under its belt, now that the Cubs are mathematically eliminated from the N.L. Central — wait, that was July — now I'm ready for the excitement the fall brings to Havre.

The MSU-N volleyball team is already two matches and a spirited Maroon/Gold scrimmage into its season and things are looking good.

Meanwhile, Northern football has been teasing me with scrimmages and practices for nearly a month now, but that will change this weekend in Dillon and I can't wait.

On the high school front, the Blue Pony golf team is well into its season, having played a tournament in Havre already.

But things really get cooking on Saturday. The Pony football team will play its season-opener against Whitefish, and no matter how hot it is, to any time longtime Havre resident, the first football game played at Blue Pony Stadium, whether it's HHS or the Lights, always signals the official start of fall sports in Havre.

The HHS volleyball team will start its season on the road Saturday in Butte and the Blue Pony cross country team makes its debut next week in Cut Bank.

Pony sports starting to crank it up means it's finally here, it's finally under way, and that's just perfect with me.

High school football will also take center stage up and down the Hi-Line the next two weekends. Don't forget, our area is truly unique as its hard to find 8-man and Six-man football anymore. But fans can find it here, and schools like Chester/J-I, Chinook, Harlem, Rocky Boy, Big Sandy and North Star will certainly provide those exciting opportunities in the coming weeks.

If I sound just a little excited, it's because I am. Oh yeah, and the Montana Grizzlies are coming back too.

Some people wait all year for Christmas, some for their birthday, but I can't help it, I wait for the beginning of a new year of high school and college sports around here. What can I say, it's what I do, it's what I love.
