Men will cook to raise funds for families

It's been four years, and the "wining" continues.

Saturday, April 2, brings, once again, the annual "Men Who Cook For Women Who Wine" fundraiser for the Northern Montana Hospital foundation to Hingham.

The event was started in 2007 to raise money for the the hospital's Hi-Line Sletten Cancer Center. When that was finished two years ago, the events funds started going to Serving of Hope From Men Who Cook, an organization to provide "financial assistance to families in need who are experiencing a serious medical condition. "

Joyce Donoven, who has organized the event since it began, said it's about expressing the communities' support.

"It's been helping a lot of people in our hospital with dialysis and cancer, " Donoven said. "It is just to let people know that the Hi-Line is behind them. "

The event will be held this Friday, starting at 6 p. m., in the Hingham Community Center.

According to Donoven, this year's event brings 26 chefs together in 15 cooking stations, providing a variety of foods. Past years have seen dishes vary from barbecue to sushi.

"They spend all year talking about what they're going to put together, " Donoven said.

Admission, $20 for an individual or $35 for a couple in advance, or $25 for individuals at the door, allows attendees to sample all of the foods provided and to place three votes for their favorite foods.

The winning chefs then get to take home some travelling trophies.

There are numerous other activities going on during the event, including auctions, both silent and live, a bingo game for a trip to Vegas and a bunch of raffles.

Donoven said people interested in the games can pick up a $20 participation bundle at the door that includes a bingo board, raffle tickets and other game-related materials.

Some of the prizes and auction items, donated by the event's 80 or so sponsors, include quilts, catered meals and rounds of golf.

Tickets can be picked up in advance in stores in Havre, such as Norman's Ranchwear, and across the Hi-Line, such as Walleye's Tavern and the Gildford Mercantile.

Donoven said that transportation will be provided in a bus from 15 West in Havre to Hingham. For a seat on the bus, contact Donoven at 395-4505.
