Dreaming of a not-so-white Christmas

Correction: The community Christmas dinner will be held at the Eagles club.

Despite a warning from the Montana Department of Transportation that people should watch for wintry road conditions in parts of the state, the National Weather System is predicting anything but that for Christmas in the Havre area.

The forecast for the weekend calls for mostly sunny skies with highs 40s and 50s for Saturday and Sunday, with low in the upper 20s.

Despite the general lack of winter in north-central Montana, MDT is reminding people that some roads and regions of the state are in snowy conditions, and that people should check ahead and use caution.

In the release warning people about road conditions, MDT adds that people should remember that conditions can change quickly from the time they access the information to the time of their trip.

People can find road information by dialing 511 — or (800) 226-7623 — or by visiting http://www.mdt511.com. The system covers much of the 24,500 miles of roads MDT maintains, relaying timely information to motorists about travel advisories, winter driving conditions, weather forecast information, construction information, road closures and major delays, the release says.

People checking conditions online can view images from more than 40 web cameras that provide viewers a first-hand glance at Montana's roadway and pass conditions. Road Weather Information Stations provide weather, surface temps, wind speed, precipitation and humidity at over 60 locations. People can sign up for RSS and Twitter updates online.

The Weather Service is predicting a slight drop in temperatures and a chance of some snow in the Havre area before the New Year holiday.

The forecast calls for continued mostly sunny conditions Monday, with a high of 39, but a chance of snowshowers Tuesday through Thursday, with highs in the upper 30s to lower 40s.
