Chief of Police Nystrom resigns

Havre's Chief of Police Jerry Nystrom submitted his letter of resignation earlier this week.

According to Mayor Tim Solomon, Nystrom's last day as chief will be on Tuesday, May 10.

"It sounds like they're going to be leaving for some other opportunity, " Solomon said.

Nystrom was unavailable for comment. The Havre Police Department said that he was off for the day. And the phone number at the house he is selling has already been disconnected.

According to an update on Nystrom's wife Ashlie's Facebook page from last Friday afternoon, they plan on moving to Sulphur, Okla., a town half the size of Havre in southern Oklahoma, about halfway between Tulsa, Okla., and Dallas.

The mayor said that he planned on releasing the letter at Monday's upcoming Havre City Council meeting.

According to Solomon, Nystrom turned in his resignation so the mayor could add it to the agenda, so they can begin taking the necessary action.

"We'll be doing something here shortly, " Solomon said.

Nystrom started in law enforcement, with the Hill County Sheriff's Office, in 1988.

He started with the police department in 1993.

Former Mayor Bob Rice appointed Nystrom as the interim chief of police in May 2008, and he became the permanent chief in January 2009.

Solomon, who has been working with Nystrom since becoming mayor in January 2010, said he wishes Nystrom luck.

"I wish him well, as far as his adventures, " Solomon said.
