Breaking Sports: Lights push two into semis; Evan Hinebauch upset in the quarters

Montana State University-Northern senior Evan Hinebauch won't get the chance to defend his 184-pound national championship. On Friday in the quarterfinals of the 2012 NAIA national tournament in Des Moines, Iowa, Hinebauch was upset by Campblesville's Allen Scruggs, 4-3 in double overtime. Scruggs had a riding time advantage of a mere few seconds over Hinebauch, who will still be a four-time all-american when all is said and done.

Meanwhile, it was a good day for Hinebauch's younger brother, Ethan, who advanced to 165-pound semifinals with a 6-4 decision. He'll take on Kevin Hardy of OKC in the semifinals. MSU-N senior Anthony Weerheim also moved into the semifinals at 141 pounds with a 3-2 win. Weerheim will meet Campbelsville's Chris Teague in the next round. Northern freshman Mickey Cheff lost in the quarters by technical fall Friday at 157 pounds. In all, the Lights have five wrestlers remaining in the tourney, with Max Payne still going at 174 pounds.

Former Havre Blue Pony Myles Mazurkiewicz reached the semifinals at 141 pounds by winning 4-3 decision on Friday. He'll wrestle UGF teammate Anthony Varnell for a spot in the championship match. Going into tonight's semifinal session, the Lights have scored 44 points and are currently in 7th place. Grand View leads with 79 points. Southern Oregon is second while UGF is in fourth.
