Lights make a big impact at the Battle of the Rockies

The Battle of the Rockies Tournament in Great Falls is always one of the biggest events on the Montana State University-Northern schedule each season.

It's close to home and the Lights always strive to do well there. And Northern certainly accomplished that mission this past weekend as the No. 7 Lights won all three of their duals on Friday and placed 11 grapplers overall in the open tournament Saturday at the CMR Fieldhouse.

"I feel like we wrestled really well and continued to build towards where we believe we can get," MSU-N head coach Tyson Thivierge said. " The guys rallied around each other and pushed each other to go for bonus points and falls. That is what is needed to win close duals and to get points at tournaments."

The Lights opened the Battle of the Rockies Duals on Friday afternoon with a dominant 30-18 win over McKendree. Duell Stadel (125), Hunter Azure (141), Mickey Cheff (157) and Kody Reed (184) all picked up pins for the Lights, while Cameron Neiss earned a huge win over Brendan Murphy, a former national champion, while top-ranked Ethan Hinebauch got a big win at 165 pounds.

And the Lights were just getting started as they took down the NAIA's 14th-ranked team in Indiana Tech, 26-24. The big win came from Neiss at 133 pounds as he knocked off No.1-ranked Travis Barroquillo by major decision. Stadel, Azure, Hinebauch, Reed and Toby Cheff at 197 also earned wins the exciting dual for the Lights.

For good measure, the Lights then went on to make it a perfect Friday by crushing Western Region rival Embry-Riddle 37-18. Stadel won again, as did Neiss, Azure, Hinebauch, Reed and Toby Cheff. Tucker Erickson also garnered a hard-fought, 7-4 win at heavyweight for MSU-N.

"Our first two duals went really well," Thivierge said. "We came out and pressed the action and really shot out of the gates. Our guys are starting to believe in their conditioning and their abilities. It was an exciting couple hours of wrestling and one that was definitely fun to watch. Cameron Neiss had to be the highlight of the afternoon. Overall we had a great day."

As good as Friday was the for the Lights, Saturday went just as well. In

the Battle of the Rockies Open, the Lights not only placed 11, but they advanced three to the finals, while Ethan Hinebauch beat UGF's Shaun Lau 3-2 for the 165-pound championship. Reed also reached the finals where he was defeated by former Chinook star Ben Stroh, who's now a red-shirt at the University of Wyoming. Toby Cheff reached the finals at 197, before falling McKendree's Julian Smith. Neiss (133), Azure (141), Aaron LaFarge (125), Jared Miller (174) and Garrett DeMers (184) were all outstanding as well, all winning their final match of the day to place third.

Eli Hinbauch (157) and Stadel (125), two former Blue Pony standouts placed fourth for the Lights, while Trevor Goss finished fifth at 149.

And with two great days of competition under their belts, the Lights are feeling good heading into their huge showdown with the Argos Tuesday night in Havre.

"This tournament was an opportunity for us to get good competition that we wouldn't normally see," Thivierge said. I have to take my hat off to Caleb (Schaeffer, UGF head coach) for bringing in these teams and giving us all that opportunity. As a team, we have found some consistency and we are just getting better every week. We are really excited and ready for Tuesday night with UGF."

The Lights and Argos will go head-to-head Tuesday night at 7 inside the Armory Gymnasium.
