Havre heads back on the road

When it comes to playing opponents from Great Falls, the Havre American Legion baseball club is perfect so far in 2012.

But the North Stars will be up against a better level of competition in the Electric City on Sunday. The North Stars will put their 3-0 Northern District record on the line when they face the Great Falls Electrics in a conference doubleheader on Sunday at Don Olson Field in Great Falls.

Havre has beaten the Great Falls Stallions three times this season in league play, including a 16-3 thrashing Wednesday night at Legion Field.

In all three games, the North Stars belted double-digit hits, with Justin Jensen, Mark Vukasin and Brandon Smith combining for 11 hits and six extra-base knocks on Wednesday night.

On the mound, the North Stars have done well to stymie the Stallions' bats, allowing just 12 runs in three games.

However, the Electrics are considered the more talented, and more experienced team of the two Great Falls' Class A squads, so Sunday's games will be a better test of where the North Stars are at this young season.

Havre will likely go with the top two pitchers in head coach Dan Wirtzberger's rotation in Smith and Jensen, but Vukasin and Thurman Holdsclaw could also see action on the mound.

And while Havre's bats are also on a roll right now, the Electrics have some strong pitching, including former North Star Kolby Sukut.

The Electrics have a 2-0 record in district play coming into Sunday's big games with the North Stars and the winner will have an early led up in the conference standings, though the heavy summer schedule is still a few weeks away. Sunday's games also mark the start of four straight between the North Stars and Electrics. Havre will host Great Falls next Sunday at Legion Field.
