Hi-Line Girls Roundup: Morning Stars, T-Bird, Hawks win big

With the Native American Classic going on in Havre, as well as tip-offtournaments in Big Sandy and Chester, the opening weekend of high schoolgirls basketball was about as action-packed as it gets on the Hi-Line.Almost every area team kicked off its season this weekend, and the games began Thursday and didn't stop until late Saturday night.The Rocky Boy girls got off to a perfect 2-0 start to the season with a pair of wins at the NAC, which was held at MSU-Northern's Armory Gymnasium.On Thursday night, the Morning Stars edged Class C rival Box Elder 75-66 to get the tournament started. Rocky Boy led by just two points at halftime, but a 19-5 run in the third quarter gave the Morning Stars enough of a cushion to beat the defending District 9C champion Bears.Brandi Buffalo led the way for the Morning Stars with 19 points, while Leigha Onco added 11 and Jai-Lynn Day Child scored 10. Box Elder got 13 points from Lauren Four Colors and 11 by Michelle Winchell in the loss.The action at the Big Sandy Tip-off tourney also got underway on Thursday night as the Chinook Sugarbeeters took care of the Denton Trojans, 50-38. Chinook led 29-20 at the half and used a strong third quarter to pad its lead.Hannah Weber led all scorers with 15 points for the Beeters, while Makhayla Farmer added 12 points and Emily Dennis poured in 10.Back at the NAC on Friday, the Morning Stars kept it going with an easy 66-17 win over the Heart Butte Warriors. Day Child and Onco paced the Morning Stars in the easy win with 13 and 10 points, respectively.Friday at the NAC also saw the 9C Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds clip Class B Harlem 50-47 in an exciting game. The T-Birds led big at the half, but Harlem stormed back with an 18-5 run in the third quarter, but HLP held on for the win.Shakayla Whitecow scored a game-high 23 points to lead HLP, while Chassanna Doney totaled 13 points. Harlem got 14 points from Coco Moore and 12 by Monique Doney in the loss.In Big Sandy, both the host Pioneers and the North Star Knights made their season debuts on Friday. The Pioneers topped Dutton-Brady 58-38 behind 19 points from junior Molly Herron. Mateila Cline chipped in with 11 points and Shelby Gasvoda scored 10.Things didn't go as well for the Knights as they were beaten by 7C powerhouse Roy-Winifred, 50-33. Lisa Carlon scored six points to pace North Star, while Grayson Spicher, Tylynn Rettig and Bettie Carlon each scored five.Friday was also a very busy day at the C/J-I Tournament, especially for the host Hawks.The Hawks opened its season with a 68-60 win over 8C stalwart Augusta. C/J-I trailed 42-40 in a high-scoring first half, but they battled back with an 11-5 run in the fourth quarter. Kate Graff had a huge game for the Hawks, pouring in 24 points, while Brittnee Theel scored 14.The Hawks also took care of Helena Christian Friday by a score of 68-13. Theel and Graff came up big again with 24 and 14 points, respectively, while Caitlin Vinson added seven points.C/J-I kept things rolling with a 40-24 home win on Saturday over Hinsdale. Graff paced the Hawks once again with 12 points, while Denerey Haaland added eight to help C/J-I off to a perfect 3-0 start.HLP also got its season off to a perfect start by taking care of Heart Butte 68-43 Saturday at the NAC in Havre. The game was fairly close until HLP exploded for 24 points in the final eight minutes of the contest.The T-Birds were led by a game-high 23 points from Shakayla Whitecow, while Chassanna Doney added 20 points and Kallie Martin scored 14.Saturday at the NAC also saw the Box Elder Bears improve to 1-1 after defeating Harlem 56-35.
