Ponies reach finals in Class A Duals

Facing much of the field of Class A teams, the Havre High Blue Ponies wrestling team knew they needed to be at their best this weekend. And after reaching the championship dual, it was almost a perfect weekend for the Central A Ponies.

Friday and Saturday, the Ponies were in Lewistown for the Class A Duals. And making their presence known, the Ponies finished as the No. 2 team. In the championship dual, defending Class A champion Laurel defeated the Ponies 54-33. Prior to the championship loss on Saturday, the Ponies went 6-0. HHS defeated Hardin 54-30, Dillon 51-15, Miles City 60-22, Anaconda 66-12, Browning 60-12 and Belgrade 51-30.

"It felt pretty good," Havre High head coach Scott Filius said. "We turned some matches around against kids we have lost to. We were a little short handed so we need to get back healthy, but I am expecting everybody back on Monday. I was pleased with the weekend."

The Ponies were short handed this weekend, and the Locomotives took full advantage in the championship dual.

Kolton Lodge (HWT) was expected to wrestle this weekend, but was still dinged up, so that left the Ponies open at 285. HHS was also open at 112 and 125 pounds.

"Throwing three forfeits out there and not being able to recover is tough," Filius said. "We started the dual down 18-0. But other than losing, which is never any fun, we wrestled very well."

Dillon Seely (140) was also unable to wrestle after the Ponies' win over Miles City on Friday and was missed, though Riley LaBuda did step up for the Ponies and filled in the rest of the weekend. And something the Ponies have been able to somewhat avoid this season; HHS also gave up more points than usual by getting pinned.

The Locomotives earned wins by fall over Dustin Seely (119), Thomas Gruber (130), Matt Emge (135), LaBuda (140), Grant Pattison (171) and Tyler Adams (215).

The Ponies earned wins in six matches against the Locomotives.

Grayson Brenna (98) earned a win by fall, Dylan Stewart (105) won by forfeit, Jordan Schroeder (145) won by fall, Eli Hinebauch (152) won by decision, Kameron Pribyl (160) won by fall and Casey Schaub (189) won by fall.

Though the Ponies fell short in the championship dual, they did a lot of things right this weekend. They saw a lot of top talent, but found a lot of success across the lineup. Brenna, Stewart, Hinebauch, Pribyl and Schaub all went undefeated this weekend, and Pribyl even turned a match around against Dillon's Starkel, when Pribyl earned the 2-0 decision. Jason Kolar also had a great weekend for the Ponies, coming up from junior varsity. Kolar wrestled in two duals this weekend at 152-pounds, giving the Ponies the ability to bump some wrestlers up a weight. Facing Hardin and Belgrade, Kolar was able to earn two pins on the weekend.

"Up and down the lineup," Filius said. "All of the kids performed well."

The Havre wrestling team will have a short turnaround, as the Ponies host a dual with top-ranked Class AA Great Falls High on Tuesday. Wrestling at the Havre High gymnasium in Havre, the varsity will start at 6 p.m.
