Hi-Line Boys Roundup: Stars shine bright, Thunderbirds soar

The holiday break is here. But before it arrived, many area high school boys basketball teams saw a busy slate of games to finish the 2012 portion of the schedule.

The action started on Monday with Chester/J-I beating Valier 48-44 in a District 10C battle, but Tuesday night was a big one as Rocky Boy stunned top-ranked Malta, 67-59 in Rocky Boy. It was the first loss of the season for the Mustangs, the defending Class B champions, while the Stars remained unbeaten. Junior Day Child helped lift the Stars to the win with 17 points, while Darien Lafromboise added 15.

Tuesday night also saw Chinook trounce Dodson 63-47 behind the efforts of Lane Seymour with 15 points, Scott Schmitt with 14 and Zach Molyneaux with 13.

Thursday night was a tough one for Hi-Line teams, especially the Big Sandy Pioneers, who dropped a 62-61 heartbreaker to Roy-Winifred in Bog Sandy. Jessey Bailey scored 23 points and nailed seven 3-pointers for the Pioneers, but it wasn't enough to overcome 27-point performances from the Outlaws' Luke Stulc and Chad Nemann.

The Hawks also lost their first game of the season Thursday night, falling to Dutton-Brady, 48-40 on the road. Dell Harmon scored 13 points for C/J-I. Turner was beaten as well, losing to Hinsdale 52-29 in Hinsdale. Lucas Reed led the way for the Tornadoes with 12 points.

There were big 9C clashes on Friday night, with Box Elder beating North Star 62-50 and Hays-Lodge Pole running away from Chinook, 65-52.

In Rudyard, the Bears got 14 points by Lonnie Plain Bull and 12 from Randall Gardipee, while North Star was led by a career-high 29 points from Cooper Spicher. In Hays, the Thunderbirds were paced by 14 points each from Jalen Brockie and Jeff Sorrell. Chinook was led by 20 points from Lane Seymour and 10 from Zach Molyneaux.

Friday night also Big Sandy thump Turner, 69-32. The Pioneers got 20 points from Jessey Bailey and Jeff Hanson added 18. Lucas Reed scored 15 points and Dylan Welsh added 10 for Turner.

In Class B action Friday night, Rocky Boy remained unbeaten after racing past Shelby, 77-53. IN all, 11 Stars scored in the game, with Darien Lafromboise leading the way with 17 points. Harlem wasn't as fortunate however. The Wildcats were beaten by Malta, 82-47. In the loss, Harlem was led by Micah Shawl's 13 points.

To close out 2012, Box Elder outlasted Denton 55-51 in two overtimes Saturday night. The Bears were led by 18 points from Brandon The Boy and 15 from Randall Gardipee as they remained undefeated.

Saturday night also saw HLP crush North Star, 80-40 in a 9C clash in Hays. Gage Essert and Jeff Sorrell paced the T-Birds with 17 and 16 points, respectively. North Star got a team-high 14 points from Gavin Spinler in the loss.
