Ponies compete hard at home

Both the Class A Lewistown Golden Eagles and Class B Malta Mustangs and M-Ettes have strong track and field programs this season. And facing the hosting Havre Blue Ponies in a triangular, all three teams were on display over the weekend.

Havre High's Martha Stocker gets ready to launch the shot put during Saturday's triangular between the Blue Ponies, Lewistown and Malta at the Havre Middle School Track.

Saturday the Ponies hosted the Eagle and Mustangs/M-Ettes at the Havre Middle School track in Havre.

The Eagles swept the No. 1 team spots, as both the Lewistown boys and girls finished the afternoon with 77 points. The HHS girls finished in second place with 52, and the Malta girls finished in third with 47. The Malta boys locked up second place with 62 pints, and the Blue Pony boys finished in third with 39.

But even without earning a team title on Saturday, the Ponies continue to put up a lot of solid times and marks. Charlie Christianson had a huge afternoon and qualified for the state track meet in the high jump, clearing 6-0 and claiming the No. 1 spot.

Havre High freshman Nate Rismon competes in the triple jump during Saturday's triangular meet at the Havre Middle School Track.

"Those two teams were good competition for us," Havre High head coach Trevor VanCampen said. "We were short some athletes due to music festivals, but that was the case for all three teams. But it was the last chance to compete for divisionals, and it was a productive day as far as kids earning personal records and qualifying for state like Charlie Christianson did. Any time we can get a state qualifier, it is a good day for the team as a whole."

But Thurman Holdsclaw and Marc Klimas also helped lead the HHS boys with one individual title each. Klimas won the 3,200 with a time of 10:36 and Holdsclaw won the pole vault with a height of 13-0. Klimas also took second in the 1,600 with a time of 4:57, while Holdsclaw also took second place in the triple jump with a distance of 38-9. Nate Rismon and Luke Karnauskas also pitched in by placing in two events each. Rismon finished fourth in the 400 with a time of 53.5 and third in the triple jump, jumping 36-10. And Karnauskas finished the high jump in fourth place with a height of 5-6, as well as finished fourth in the long jump with a distance of 16-3.

Jon Faber finished second in the 200-meter (25.2), Thomas Gruber finished second in the pole vault (12-6), Zach Plum finished fourth in the pole vault (11-6), and Ryne Antley finished third in the javelin (140-8). The 4x100 relay team also finished second with a time of 46.06.

Haley Ohm placed in both long distance races for the Blue Ponies Saturday in Havre.

For the HHS girls, Skylar Vukasin and Jen Nordgulen helped lead the way by earning points in three events each.

Vukasin earned three fourth-place finishes, placing in the 100 (13.8), high jump (4-8), and the long jump (13-5). Nordgulen was second in the long jump (13-9), and second in the triple jump (29-10), while also finishing the shot put in fourth place (26-10).

Corissa White also finished third in the 200 (29.8) and fourth in the pole vault (6-0). And Haley Ohm finished second in the 3,200 (13:35) and third in the 1,600 (5:57), while Martha Stocker finished third in the shot put (31-1) and second in the discus (84-6).

But it was Peyton Filius who really stepped up and earned two No. 1 finishes for the Blue Ponies. Filius ran a 1:03 in the 400 and a 2:32 in the 800.

Rachel David also took fourth in the 200 (30.1), while Megan Erickson took second in the 800-meter (2:41), and Neya Bischoff took fourth in the javelin (94-9). Carlene Rennick earned a fourth-place finish in the 110-hurdles with a time of 20.2, while both HHS relay teams also placed in the top four. The 400 relay team was second with a time of 53.78, while the 1,600 relay team also finished first with a time of 4:23.

"It was just nice to see the kids get out and compete the way they did," VanCampen said. "Some of them realized it was their last opportunity to be able compete, and I think we took advantage of that. We enjoyed the nice weather we had, and we had a lot of kids really step up and compete in events they wouldn't typically compete in. It was a good day for us. It is all about letting the kids have fun and enjoy themselves, and that is how you keep them interested track, and hopefully coming back year after year."

HHS's Charlie Christianson runs the long relay during Saturday's triangular meet at the Havre Middle School track.

HHS has nearly two weeks off before they compete again. Next up will be the Central A divisional track meet in Livingston on May 17 -18.
