Havre student to visit Australia with 'People to People'

Havre High School student China Bohn will travel to Australia this summer under the People to People program in what promises to be the opportunity of a lifetime.

She will visit the Barrier Reefs, tour Sydney Opera House, see the Outback and spend time with Australian families.

People to People was created by President Dwight Eisenhower in the 1950s, and since then thousands of people have traveled abroad to increase international understanding and help develop their leadership skills.

Involvement in People to People has also been effective in helping get into the college of your choice, she said.

"Eighty percent of the people who take part are accepted at their first choice for college," she said.

At Havre High, China has been a softball star and recently won a superior rating at the district musical festival. She also holds down two jobs.

One of the key rules of People to People is that students have to raise their own funds for the trip.

In past years, several Havre people have taken part in the program, but this year, she is the only Hi-Line person going on the trip.

But she is working with a Great Falls group to raise money.

"We are having a 31-day raffle," she said.

Every day for 31 days, a drawing will be held on a variety of gift packages.

The winners will get items ranging from a $250 WalMart gift certificate, a half-day Duck Lake fishing trip, a 12-month wine package and a golf game for two at a Fort Benton golf course.

China put together a Havre package. The winner will get a overnight stay at TownHouse Inn of Havre and two tickets to Havre Beneath the Streets, the Wahpka Chu'gn Buffalo Jump and Fort Assinniboine.

Anyone who wants a raffle ticket can see her or her father, Gerald Bohn, on the street, email her at [email protected] or stop this weekend at Gary & Leo's Fresh Foods where she will have a table set up.

China Bohn will sell raffle tickets to help finance her trip to Australia under the People to People program this weekend:

• Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

• Sunday, noon to 6 p.m.

Tickets are $5 for one or five for $20 at Gary & Leo's Fresh Foods.
