Bullock seeks federal assistance for flood damage

HELENA (AP) — Gov. Steve Bullock is seeking federal assistance for damage caused by this spring's flooding in northern and central Montana, especially in Hill and Blaine counties and Rocky Boy's Indian Reservation.

The Democratic governor sent President Barack Obama a request for a federal disaster declaration on Monday. A presidential declaration would allow federal aid to be used to assist with repairs.

The request includes a preliminary assessment that says the flooding from heavy rainfall in May caused $3.15 million in damage in 12 counties and three Indian reservations.

Those with the most damage are the Rocky Boy's reservation and Hill and Blaine counties.

Bullock says in his letter there is extensive damage to roads, culverts, bridges, water systems, public buildings and homes.

Several areas remain inaccessible due to bridge and culvert damage.
