Laurel — United Way of Hill County does a tremendous job of raising funds for a variety of community organizations that provide invaluable services to the Havre community. Unfortunately, they are about $30,000 short of their goal for the coming year. We hope the Hi-Line joins in its usual generosity to help out United Way.

Laurel — The Domestic Abuse Hotline has been of tremendous value to Hi-Line residents. People in abusive relationships have found help by learning where to turn. Now there is an effort to expand the services to help other people — those who deal with mental health issues or other problems. To meet this goal, organizers will need more volunteers. We hope people come forward.

Dart — Poaching is a crime against nature and a crime against all law-abiding hunters. All the time we see stories in the Havre Daily News about authorities looking for help in apprehending poachers. Someone illegally killed three cow elk in Idaho recently. Whoever would have thought the guilty party was the wildlife advocate for the Greater Yellowstone Coalition? Marv Hoyt pleaded guilty to poaching charges this week. He’s on vacation and will retire on the first of the year. Not soon enough.

Laurel — Nate St. Pierre is set to be installed as president of Stone Child College today. Much of the hope that exists on Rocky Boy’s Indian Reservation comes from Stone Child. It offers educational opportunities unavailable elsewhere. All colleges have lists of success stories, but few are as impressive as Stone Child’s list. There are may responsible positions at Rocky Boy, few of them as important as Stone Child president. Best of luck, St. Pierre.

Laurel — The Eagles Club has done a lot of community service over its long history in Havre. One of the most important is its decision to take over the annual Community Christmas Dinner. The dinner has become a community tradition, and it certainly would be missed by a lot of people if it were to be discontinued. Thanks to the Eagles Club.
