A chill is in the air. At this ghostly, beastly time of year, you may want to read some of these spooky tales.

“It” by Stephen King is a story that preys on your childhood fears. “Wolfen” by Whitley Strieber has you listening for the whispers in the night, and fearing the shadows you don’t see. “Ghost Story” by Peter Straub involves mysterious deaths and a creepy man with golden eyes. These three books have been made into movies, but the films cannot compare to the books when it comes to making your spine tingle and your blood chill.

Written in 1994, “The Hot Zone,” by Richard Preston is a terrifying true story written about rare and deadly viruses, including Ebola. The events take place between 1967 and 1993.

For the younger set there are stories about facing your fears, such as Dr. Seuss’ “What Was I Scared Of?” This story can be found in “The Sneetches and Other Stories.” “One Minute Scary Stories” by Shari Lewis and “More Scary Stories from around the World” by Arielle Olson are for reading in bed with the flashlight under the covers.

All of these books are available at the Havre-Hill County Library. Check them out if you dare! Ooowa! Ha! Ha! Ha!

Never fear, if you get too scared, you can always come to the library for some relief. In the fall and winter we show movies every other Thursday at 7 p.m. We will kick this off Oct. 30 with the award-winning film, “Gravity,” starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney. Bullock and Clooney play two astronauts stranded in space after the destruction of their shuttle.

“Gravity” is a thriller every bit as blood chilling as some of the books listed above. It’s rated PG-13. This event is free and open to the public. We will be serving popcorn, which will also be free, and other free things, like water.

In January and February we will be hosting our annual Winter Reading Series. The Winter Reading Series is a book club and lecture series. It is also open to the public and free.

This year our theme is orphans, and we will be reading the books “Anne of Green Gables” by L.M. Montgomery, “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian” by Sherman Alexie, “Orphan Train” by Christina Baker Cline, and “Let Him Go” by Larry Watson.

All of these books will be available to be checked out at the library. We will announce a schedule for the Winter Reading Series soon.
