Elvis has left the Havre station

Elvis Presley touched many lives during his time and, for a brief moment, Havre had the chance to see him in person, but only one person was able to get his autograph.

Today marks what would be Presley's 80th birthday if he had not died in 1977.

In 1957, a Havre Daily News article reports that Presley was traveling through Havre on the Great Northern Empire Builder, which was scheduled to stop briefly — around 15 minutes.

“The biggest crowd of Havre residents ever seen at the Great Northern Ry. Co. station turned out to see Presley, and was disappointed,” an article by L.A. Bach reads.

The only person who was able to see Presley also got his autograph. Hill County Sheriff Deputy Al Halladay was able to get on the train and interview the rock and roll icon with the help of a train conductor.

“I told the conductor that I wanted Presley’s autograph for a kid, and he took me to the compartment,” Halladay told a Havre Daily News reporter.

“When Halladay asked Presley for the autograph for a child, the famous singer declared ‘I’m pretty tired.’ But he obliged with the autograph, attired in a dark robe over lightcolored pajamas and bedroom slippers,” one of the articles read.
