Busy weekend for Blue Pony swimmers

Last Saturday was a really good day in the pool for the Havre High swim teams. Now the Blue Ponies will try and duplicate that feat.

Havre will be back in the Swarthout Pool in Great Falls for a dual meet with the CMR Rustlers and Great Falls High Bison Friday, then the Blue Ponies will travel to Missoula for the prestigious Missoula Invitational.

Both meets will be difficult for the Blue Ponies, but according to HHS head coach Jill Cammon, Havre has been making some strong strides in recent meets.

Last Saturday, the Blue Pony girls finished an outstanding third at the Great Falls Invitational. The big feat came as Havre tied Class A rival Billings Central at the meet. The Rams are the four-time defending state champions.

Among the highlights for the Ponies was their 400-meter relay team, which now has one of the fastest times this season. That team is composed of Lita Cammon, Lieza Reighard, Amelia Miller and Aubri McCann. Miller also has one of the Top 12 times in the state this season in the grueling 500-meter freestyle, while coach Cammon added that Lita Cammon and Hannah Pepprock swam faster last weekend than they have all season in the 100 freestyle and the 100 breaststroke, respectively.

The HHS boys are also improving with every race. Coach Cammon noted that Clayton Twombly has stepped up the last few meets to bring in points for the boys, while Jamie Lieberg, Jimmy May, Logan Gardner and Zach Barnes all showed improved times last Saturday in Great Falls. The ponies also continue to get great times from senior Ben Siegel in the freestyle races and sophomore Shandon Oberquell in the breaststroke.

And good competition certainly helps the HHS swimmers improve, and they'll see plenty of that this weekend. HHS is very familiar with the Rustlers and Bison, but the Missoula Invitational will provide the Ponies with a chance to race against three strong Missoula teams, as well as top teams from Helena High and Helena Capital. The Kalispell schools will also be in attendance, as will the Bison and Rustlers, along with the top team in Class AA, the Bozeman Hawks.

Following this weekend's meets, Havre has just one event left on its schedule before the state meet Feb. 13-14, also at the Grizzly Pool in Missoula. Next Saturday, the Blue Ponies will close out the regular season at the Helena Invitational.
