Lincoln County woman denies elder abuse, theft

The woman accused of embezzling nearly $50,000 in cash and property from an elderly Hi-Line man pleaded not guilty Thursday in state District Court in Havre to charges of elder abuse and theft.

According to records at the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, Lisa L. Cole, born in 1972, of the Troy area was released on bail Jan. 14.

Cole was officially charged Dec. 30 with one count of elder abuse and one count of theft.

Court documents say Cole had the alleged victim's power of attorney, giving her access to various finances.

She pleaded not guilty Thursday to both counts before District Judge Dan Boucher.

Cole's representative, Kaydee Snipes, requested that Cole be able to travel within the state of Montana while awaiting future court dates.

Boucher asked if Cole would need to travel outside of Lincoln County for any reason other than attending court hearings.

Cole replied, "No."

Boucher then said Cole is allowed to travel outside of Lincoln County if she obtains a travel permit from the Hill County Attorney's office, unless the travel is to attend court hearings in Hill County.

If convicted, Cole faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $50,000. Her next court date is scheduled for Feb. 23, at 9 a.m. at the Hill County Courthouse.
