Athlete's Foot wins HYBA Majors title at Lions Field

Despite some rising temperatures, the weather was beautiful in Havre over the weekend, which made the conditions picture perfect for the championship of the Havre Youth Baseball Association Majors league.

The Majors tournament began last Thursday and continued until Saturday, when the Lions team challenged Athlete’s Foot for the championship. And in a classic battle, the Athlete’s Foot team held off a late rally from Lions to take home a 6-5 win and the Majors title.

The Athlete’s Foot consisted of Joey Bird, Eli Cloninger, Dylan George, Callan Gobin, Jacob Huston, Colby Lammers, Collin Miller, Taydem Morley, Alexander Ost, Clint Owens, Jeremiah Rowles, Xavier Ulano and Joshua Warp.

The Lions team, which finished second, was made up of Geoffrey Anderson, Wyatt Antonich, Kaine Birdtail, Ethan Carlson, Caleb Chambliss, Carson Lunak, Tavish McLean, Derek Olson, Taylor Parsons, Marc Ramirez, Hunter Smith, Shawn Sullivan and Kris Tanner.

After beating out FLC Construction and Richman Insurance to qualify for the championship game, Lions and Athlete’s Foot played a memorable game that wasn’t decided until the last pitch was thrown. After Athlete’s Foot built an early 4-0 lead thanks to some stellar pitching from Jake Huston, Lions staged a rally.

After failing to score in the first four innings of the game, Lions scored five in the fifth thanks in large part to a two-run double by Ethan Carlson and another double by Carson Lunak moments later that scored two runs and put Lions ahead 5-4.

Yet, in the bottom half of the fifth inning Athlete’s Foot responded with a pair of runs to reclaim the lead. Then, after allowing Lions to load the bases with two outs, Cloninger struck out the final batter to seal the win for Athlete’s Foot.

Earlier Saturday, Lions had to earn its way into the championship after losing to Athlete’s Foot 14-4 Friday afternoon. Yet, Lions took care of business thanks to another late rally, in which the team plated five runs in the fifth inning to grab a 12-8 lead on FLC Construction, which ended up being the final score.

The win was the second in the tournament for Lions over FLC Construction. The two teams met in the first round of the double-elimination tournament Thursday and after a hard-fought game, Lions ended up squeaking out a 6-3 win. In the other first-round matchup Thursday, Athlete’s Foot cruised to a 13-3 win over Richman Insurance.

After losing in the first round, both FLC Construction and Richman Insurance faced elimination Friday, but FLC Construction managed to live on another day by claiming a dramatic 7-6 win thanks to a run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

The Athlete’s Foot wrapped up their spot in the championship game with a 14-4 win over Lions Friday night, but its opponent was decided Saturday morning, when Lions defeated FLC 12-8.

The tournament was the first of three straight tournaments that will be hosted by the Havre Youth Baseball Association. The next tournament starts Thursday and it will be the Minors tournament. It will be held at Elks Park. Then, starting June 22, the Babe Ruth tournament will get underway at Legion Field.
