Havre to hold public sessions on streets plan

Havre City Council will hold two public education sessions to let people know the details of a proposed $30 million street rehabilitation program.

At the suggestion of Council Member Terry Lilletvedt, the sessions will be held after City Council meetings Monday, Sept. 25, and Monday, Oct. 5. Meetings are usually over at roughly 7:30 p.m.

Lilletvedt said she has heard of considerable support for the concept of the construction program, but people are very wary of the cost.

A PowerPoint presentation will be designed to help explain why the money is needed and where it will go to, she said,

Council members say they have heard for years from constituents complaining about the condition of city streets, she said.

Under the proposal, $1.5 million will be spent annually for 20 years to fix streets that have fallen into disrepair.

A list of priority streets has been compiled, she said, but it could change over the years.

Lilletvedt said she has offered to speak to community groups about the proposal, and once the PowerPoint program is prepared, she will become more aggressive in marketing the presentation.

The matter will be decided in the fall election. Nov. 3 is Election Day, but it will be entirely a mail-in election, and ballots will be mailed out by the Hill County Clerk and Recorder’s Office on Oct. 16.
