Alleged burglar denied release from jail

A woman who is accused of breaking into a relative's home and stealing expensive jewelry was denied release until her scheduled trial.

Erica Dion, who has pleaded not guilty to two burglary charges and two counts of theft by obtaining unauthorized control of property, asked to be released to live with her father until May 24, when she is due in District Court for her jury trial hearing.

Dion, hands shackled and wearing a yellow inmate jumpsuit, had a few minutes to speak to her public defender, Paul Neal, alone through a television monitor before Judge Daniel Boucher walked into District Court at 2:45 p.m.

The defense said that Dion's relationship with her father, although rocky in the past, had been "repaired" and requested Dion be released to live with her father. The sate, represented by Deputy Hill County Attorney Carolyn Gray, said there was nothing to indicate the relationship was intact and they were not comfortable releasing Dion on her own recognizance.

Boucher denied the request and told the defense to get in writing that Dion's father is willing to have her released under his supervision.

Dion pleaded not guilty in November to charges alleging she broke into her relative's home on at least two occasions and stole items including a diamond bracelet appraised at $9,300 and other jewelry appraised at between $1,500 and $2,000.
