Fast Times: Havre track teams score at state

Nate Rismon, 1,600 boys relay team bring home state titles from Class A track meet

The Havre High track teams came into the Class A state track meet with expectations of doing well and scoring points. What the Blue Ponies didn’t expect was to win state championships in two different events.

As well as a number of Havre athletes did, though the weekend really belonged to senior Nate Rismon, who won Class A’s 400-meter dash with a time of 50.33. Rismon was also a key part of the 1,600 relay team that won that event Saturday to cap the meet with another state title after a time of 3:25. Joining Rismon on the state-champion relay team were Luke Karnauskas, Michael Loftus and Jacob LaBrie.

With two first-place finishes to their credit, the Havre boys finished with a total of 25 points, which was good enough for ninth. Dillon won the state title with 84 points. Columbia Falls was second with 66 and Corvallis was third with 45.33.

“It was a lot of fun,” HHS head coach John Ita said. “That Nate Rismon, he had a heck of a track meet.”

Rimson put together a memorable performance because, in addition to winning the 400 and being part of the 1,600 relay, Rismon also ran the 200 in 22.66 to finish fourth. He was also a member of the 400 relay team that earned a sixth-place finish after posting a season-best time of 44.20.

“The 400 relay team, that was one of the real surprises,” Ita said. “They had not been under 45 seconds all year. And for them to come out and perform the way they did and to get them up on that podium was great to see.”

While the Havre girls were nowhere near the point in terms of team points, the Ponies did manage to score a total of four points, after scoring none at state track a season ago. Corvallis ended up taking home the team title with 67 points. Columbia Falls was second with 57 and Hamilton was a close third with 56.

The points that Havre scored came from two of its stalwarts in senior Rachel David and junior Naomi Terry. David, who has had a decorated career with the Ponies, had never placed at state prior to the 2016 meet. Yet, she broke that streak as she finished fifth in the 800 after running a 2:25.42.

“It was really special for Rachel to be able to get up on the podium,” Ita said. “She was close before, but always just finished outside of it. And this year, the competition was just so tough among the distance runners.”

Terry also finished off her stellar junior season by finishing fifth in the 200 with a time of 26.91. Terry, a junior, will be counted on to lead the team into next season, Ita said.

“It’s going to be her time next year,” Ita said. “She is going to have to step into that leadership role, but it’s going to be her time to shine.”

While the two Havre tracks teams failed to contend for a team trophy this weekend, the Ponies did score a total of 29 points, which was a vast improvement on the two points Havre managed to get from both teams a season ago.

“I think we are right on track for where I wanted us to be at this point,” Ita said. “I wanted to build a team around 400 runners, both on the boys and the girls. If you can get 400 runners, you can have middle distance and we wanted to be strong in those 1,600 relays. That has been an emphasis every since I took over. So that’s something I feel good about. But, we need to develop more in our field events. If we can do that and get some more out of our throwers, we might be able to do some things in a year or two.”
