Local thinclads win medals in track

CJI senior Justin May goes out with a bang

The 2016 Class C state track meet has come and gone and once again, a number of local athletes from the Hi-Line and surrounding area had standout performances.

On the boys side of things, no local team performed better than the Chester-Joplin-Inverness Hawks, who in particular, got a memorable performance from senior Justin May. May, a stellar three-sport athlete, who has been working to win a state title for four years and, finally, in track he achieved it in the long jump, as he took the crown with a jump of 20-11.

However, May also scored points in three other events at last week's Class C state meet in Missoula. He notched a third-place showing in the 300 hurdles (40.02), as well as a fifth-place finish in the javelin (172-09). He also finished sixth in the triple jump after a jump of 42-3. Cameron Davis of CJI also finished sixth in the discus (133-02), which helped the Hawks get the 20 points they needed to finish ninth.

When it was all said and done, the team title went to Ennis with 83 points. Jordan finished second with 58 and Charlo finished third with 46. Other local teams that scored points were Box Elder, which finished with seven, good enough for 20th and Turner, which finished 21st with six points.

Box Elder got all of its points from senior Shane Ketchum, who notched a third-place finish in the 1,600 after posting a time of 4:38.77. Ketchum also finished finished sixth in the 3,200 after a 10:17.24. Eddie Harmon of Turner also notched a top-three finish, ending up third in the 800 after running it in 2:00.92. Payton Peterson of North Star also worked his way onto the podium in the pole vault.

When it came to the girls competition, the Fort Benton girls were the top team from the area as they scored a total of 19 points, which was good enough for ninth place, The Chinook Sugarbeeters were the only other local team that scored points over the weekend and finished with 10 points.

Freshman Leah Gannon continued her spectacular season finishing third in the 400 (58.93) and sixth in the 200 with a time of 26.37. Senior Kaitlyn Bird also finished fifth in the 300 hurdles (47.72) and the 800 (2:22.39). Maddy Thompson also scored points at the meet for the Longhorns as she notched a fourth-place showing with a time of 13.02.

Chinook also got a strong showing from Abigail Ellison, who added to her Northern C Divisional title in the triple jump with a second-place finish at state with a jump of 34-03. The Beeters also finished fifth in the 400 relay.

At last week's Class B meet in Bozeman, Harlem's Damon Adams was one of the top sprinters, finishing second in the 200 meters and fifth in the 400. Adams scored all of Harlem's points as the Wildcats finished in 10th place with 17.
