Hi-Line Football Roundup

Pioneers, T-Birds end on a high note

The 2016 high school football season seemed to go quicker than usual, and this last week, all but two local teams from the Hi-Line played their final football game of the season, as just two, North Star and Chester-Joplin-Inverness, advanced to the postseason.

While the Hawks clinched their playoff spot a week earlier with a win over Power-Dutton-Brady, CJI still had a road game against Fort Benton last Wednesday and surprisingly, the game didn't go as planned.

The Longhorns, who had little to play for, other than pride, shellacked the Hawks 54-12, behind the 200 rushing yards and three touchdowns from Connor Schnabel. The win was the first of the season for the Longhorns, who finished 1-7. The Hawks, who will travel to Charlo Saturday, finished 5-4 in Northern C of Class C 8-Man football. CJI got touchdown runs from Brett Henke and Mitchell Fisher in the loss.

Ty Hasbrouck added two touchdown runs, while Landon Taylor also tossed two touchdowns in the home win for Fort Benton.

Hays-Lodge Pole 24, Chinook 22

Elsewhere in the Northern C, the Chinook Sugarbeeters played their final game of the 2016 season and much like the rest of the year, it didn't go the way the Beeters wanted, as they fell 24-22 to Hays-Lodge Pole Wednesday in Hays.

The T-Birds, who ended a lengthy losing streak earlier in the season, finished 2016 on a high note with their second victory of the season, giving the program just its second win in the last five years. Chinook, on the other hand, the defending state champions, finished 2-7.

Poplar 56, Rocky Boy 6

In local 11-Man football, the Rocky Boy Stars finished up their first season of varsity action in Class B last Wednesday on the road in Poplar. The Indians, who were winless before the game, easily dispatched of the Stars, defeating them 56-6.

Rocky Boy scored on a 41-yard run by Kordell Small in the first quarter, which put them up 6-0. But after that, Poplar scored 56 consecutive points to get the win in both team's season finale. Rocky Boy finished the year 1-8.

Conrad 78, Harlem 0

The Harlem Wildcats came into the final weekend of the regular season with two wins and despite a 78-0 loss to Conrad Friday night on the road, the Wildcats still have plenty to be proud of with their 2-6 record.

After winning just one game a year ago, the Wildcats managed to improve and became the first Wildcats team in years to post more than one victory.

Valier 70, Box Elder 6

Elsewhere, in Six-Man football action in Box Elder Wednesday, the Bears hosted Valier in the final game of the regular season and were defeated handily by the Panthers, who boast a 7-1 record going into the playoffs this weekend

Valier jumped out to a 20-0 advantage before Tanner Parisian scored on an eight-yard run for the Bears, but after that, it was all Panthers, who ran up a total of 70 points before the day was through.

The Bears, who were the Six-Man runner-up in 2015, finished the season 1-7.

Big Sandy 66, Augusta 32

The Big Sandy Pioneers may have fallen short of the Six-Man playoffs, but they still had plenty to play for last Wednesday in Augusta.

That's because a win would at least get the Pioneers to .500 and after winning just a couple games a year ago, the Pioneers were able to notch their fourth win, thanks to a 66-32 trouncing of Augusta. Laurence Alderdice ran for three touchdowns and caught two more to lead Big Sandy. Weston Alderdice also had an impressive night with three touchdowns in the win for the Pioneers. They finished the season 4-4.

Geraldine-Highwood 52, North Star 15

The North Star Knights had already secured their berth in the Six-Man playoffs, so they had nothing to lose when they hosted Geraldine-Highwood, one of the best teams in the state last Wednesday in a North Division showdown.

And the Rivals, who finished second in the North, dominated the game from start to finish, defeating the Knights handily 52-15. North Star did get a second-quarter touchdown from Cade Chvilicek, who also found Dylan Miller for a 15-yard touchdown later in the game. The Knights, who finished the season 5-3 overall and 4-3 in the North, following the loss, will travel to Hot Springs for an opening-round playoff game Saturday.
