Panthers shut down Ponies

Sometimes in sports, you run into an opponent that is just really good and that’s exactly what happened when the Havre High softball team took on Belgrade this past weekend.

The two Central A conference rivals, played two games inside the Sixth Avenue Memorial Field Saturday, but both games were won easily by the Panthers, who knocked off the Ponies 18-0 and 12-0.

Shania Neubauer, an MSU-Northern volleyball recruit, pitched both games and was her usual dominant self. Over the course of two games, she allowed just one hit. And in the second game, she tossed a no hitter against HHS, holding the Blue Ponies scoreless in 10 innings over two games.

“They kept their heads up,” HHS head coach Whitney McNally said. “It was tough, but we did a little better in the second game than we did in the first game and it’s tough, but they kept their heads up.”

In the first game, Havre pitcher Jaycelyn Hassa held the Panthers to just two runs in the first two innings, before Belgrade exploded for six in the top of the third and six more in the top of the fourth. In the fifth, the Panthers added four more, ending the game due to the mercy rule.

Hassa got the loss for the Ponies on the mound. Nicole Parsons was the one Havre player to get on base with a hit.

In the second game, Alex Barkus was on the mound for Havre as Belgrade scored three runs in the bottom of the first, then six in the bottom of the second. They added three more in the bottom of the fourth and when the Ponies failed to get a hit or mount any offense, the game ended after five innings.

“We just have to learn from this and keep working,” McNally said. “We need to learn how to hit tougher pitching and play against some of these better teams.”

Havre will be back in action Tuesday, when the Ponies will travel to Browning for a Central A conference game. The first pitch will go out at approximately 5:30 p.m.
