Havre Harriers strong at Helena Preview Meet

For the most part, the Havre High cross country teams take part in a pretty competitive schedule. But still, there are few meets more challenging for the Blue Ponies than the 7-on-7 Helena Preview Meet.

The Preview Meet, which was held last Thursday at Bill Roberts Golf Course in Helena, featured not only some of the top runners from Class A, but many from Class AA as well. In the girls meet, with a total of 51 teams in attendance, Bozeman took first, while the Havre girls finished well back in 31st place. In the boys race, there were 57 teams competing and at the top was Bozeman, which swept both team titles. The Pony boys finished respectability in 28th place.

Kadia Miller was the No. 1 runner for the Havre girls in the race with the other top runners at the meet, she finished 18th following a time of 20:58. With Kaylee Nystrom out, Tamera O’Leary ran in the No. 2 race for Havre and finished 34th (24:30). Amelia Miller finished 30th in the No. 3 race, with a time of 24:24. And in the races four, six and seven, the Pony girls got a 32nd from Lilly Taly (24:44), a 37th from Madison Shennum (28:05) and a 31st from Melanie Jones, who ran a 27:22.

“I thought that Kadia ran really well,” HHS head coach Josh Holt said. “Looking at her times, and some of the top times from the west, I thought she was very comparable. I also thought Tamera did well for it being her first big race.”

When it came to the Havre boys, the results were a little better as six of the seven Havre runners finished in the top 30 of their respective races. In the No. 1 race, Austin Jones was 29th (17:59), while in the race of No. 2’s, Jakob Keller of Havre finished 25th (18:14). The third runner for the Havre boys was Trevor Williams, who came in 27th (18:43) and the No. 4 was Quinn Reno, who finished 25th in his race after a time of 18:57.

Rounding things out for Havre were Cameron Pleninger (No. 5, 33rd, 19:52), Noah Azure (No. 6, 22nd, 19:20) and Barrett Kilgore, who finished 23rd in the race of No. 7 runners after finishing the course in 19:42.

“I thought that all of our boys competed really hard,” Holt said. “Austin and Jakob both ran really good times. Everyone else was pretty close together, so I was pretty pleased with the boys team.”

Both Havre teams will be back in action this weekend when they will travel to Livingston for the Central A Divisional meet. That will start Saturday at 10 a.m.
