Hi-Line Girls Roundup: Bears, Wildcats win key rivalry games

Christmas break has arrived, but it didn't come before a very busy week of Hi-Line high school girls basketball.

Last week's action got underway Monday night when the Turner Tornadoes started a strong run of back-to-back wins by defeating Chester-Joplin-Inverness 66-37 in a District 9C game in Turner. The Tornadoes pulled away from the Hawks via a 19-9 run in the third quarter.

Shyan Krass scored a game-high 18 points for Turner, while Sarah Billmayer added 17. Korrin Harmon led the Hawks with nine points.

Turner was at home again Tuesday night, and in a non-conference game, the Tornadoes blew by Dodson 54-34. Rylee Conlan poured in a game-high 17 points for the surging Tornadoes, while Billmayer added 16.

In the 9C Tuesday night, Box Elder continued its unbeaten season by blasting the Chinook Sugarbeeters 54-13 in Chinook. The Bears scored 23 unanswered points in the first quarter, while Chinook managed just three points in the first half.

The Bears had three players score in double figures, while Sierra Swank led the Beeters with just four points.

In Class B action Tuesday night, rivals Harlem and Rocky Boy put on a show in Harlem, one in which the Wildcats prevailed 73-67 in overtime. The game was tied at 30-30 at halftime, and 61-61 in regulation. But Harlem outscored the Morning Stars 12-6 in the extra four minutes to remain unbeaten on the season.

Autumn Eagleman led four Wildcats in double figures with 18 points. Mystic Striker had 15, while L'Tia Lawrence and Skylee Dirden each scored 14. Adrienne Gopher scored a game-high 22 points for the Morning Stars.

The long week of hoops continued Wednesday night, as Chinook traveled to Chester to take on CJI. And it was another rough night for the Beeters, as they fell to the Hawks 36-28. CJI led 15-10 at halftime, and once again, Chinook couldn't generate any offense. Sierra Swank did score nine points for the Beeters, but CJI's Kendahl Knapton was the star as she scored a game-high 18.

Box Elder was back in action Thursday night, and again, the Bears continued to roll. In Geraldine, the Bears blasted Highwood-Geraldine 80-24. Box Elder exploded for 30 points in the second quarter in the easy win. Cecelia Vielle and Joelnell Momberg each scored 22 points for the undefeated Bears.

Thursday night also saw North Star take down Hays-Lodge Pole 55-33 in Gildford in a 9C affair. Peytan King scored 11 points for the Knights, while Paij Peterson chipped in with nine. Mulleah Stiffarm led all scorers with 15 points for HLP.

North Star was right back on the floor Friday night, but the Knights ran into a buzzsaw in Fort Benton. North Star started great, taking a 16-15 lead, but, Fort Benton ripped off a 28-8 run in the fourth quarter, and in the second half the Longhorns outscored the Knights 44-15 to win 77-43.

Aspen Geise and Maddie Thompson combined for 25 points for Fort Benton, while Leah Gannon added 12 and McKenzie Clark scored 11. Kate Hansen led the Knights with 13 points.

Friday night also saw Harlem continue its magical start to the 2017-18 season as the Wildcats went to Cut Bank and won, 62-45. L'Tia Lawerence led a balanced Harlem attack with 14 points, while Mystic Striker and Skylee Dirden each scored 13.
