Montana Cattlemen to host 17th annual Cattlemen's Day in Lewistown

Montana Cattlemen’s Association will host its 17th annual Cattlemen’s Day Saturday, Dec. 8, at the Yogo Inn in Lewistown beginning at 9 a.m.

Starting off the program will be a special presentation to Les Graham acknowledging his 25 years of service to the Montana Ag Safety Program.

Morning speakers include Bruce D. Holmes, Division Administrator for the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to discuss the regulations for transport of livestock; Montana Department of Livestock updates by Executive Director Mike Honeycutt, Livestock Loss Mitigation Coordinator George Edwards. Chaley Harney, executive director of the Montana Beef Council, will review the producer consent form enabling 50¢ of the checkoff dollar to remain in Montana.

Also included in the program is an afternoon panel discussion on efforts to implement Montana Country-of-Origin. The panel will consist of Chris Christiaens, special projects, Montana Farmers Union; Barnet Sporkin-Morrison, Food and Ag Development Center; and a representative from Northern Plains Resource Council.

A second afternoon panel will discuss the Consolidated Salish Kootenai Tribe Water Compact. Included on that panel are Terry Backs, Catherine Vandermoer, PhD, and Jerry Laskody representing the Montana Land and Water Alliance, as well as Boone Cole of the Jocko irrigation project.

MCA will have its annual business meeting later in the afternoon.

“The business meeting is where our members bring their concerns and help us establish directives for the upcoming year,” MCA President Jim Baker said. “Above all else, we value the input of our membership.” 

During the meeting, MCA policy and resolutions will be discussed as well as nominations for district directors and officer elections.

Cattlemen’s Day is open to the public and there is no registration fee. An optional lunch for $20 and dinner for $30 will be available. Wylie and the Wild West will be the featured entertainment following dinner.
