Local Golf Report: Congrats to the Chinook girls golf team

From Tee to green

Just before the spring weather turned for the worse, area high school golfers were able to get their respective state tournaments in.

And last week was an especially good one for the Chinook girls golf team, which earned a second-place trophy at the 2019 Class C state tournament, held at Double Arrow Resort in Seeley Lake.

The Sugarbeeters shot a two-day total of 651 to finish in second place behind state champion Manhattan Christian. The Fort Benton girls also earned third place with a 674.

Leading the way for Chinook was sophomore Crystal Hofer, who finished in sixth place overall, earning Class C All-State honors. Senior Ashley MacLeod also posted an 11th-place finish, while Hailey Bell finished right behind her in 12th. Alyssa Gruszie rounded out the scoring for the Beeters with a 41st-place finish.

The Fort Benton girls were led by the outstanding play of Jaelyn Villeux, who placed fourth overall. Sarah Scott also posted a Top 15 finish for the Longhorns.

On the boys side, Chinook finished 19th with a 704, while Fort Benton was 11th at 586. Ethan MacLeod was Chinook's top finisher in 61st place, followed by Chase Moxley in 70th and Braden Eoff in 83rd.

Back on the home courses, league golf got in on Tuesday and Wednesday at Prairie Farms Golf Course but rain played havoc with Thursday night leagues.

Last Tuesday saw Wagner Plumbing score 21.5 points to take high-team honors. The squad was composed of Shawn Keeley, Barry Zanto, Dan Kiederowski and Greg Baltrusch. Kyle Sheppard shot a one-under 35 for low gross, while Gary Stretch was low net at 30.

Last Wednesday night saw Michleob Light take high team with 25 points. Jim Kato, Tom Baker, Tom Adams and Chad Spangler made up the winning team, while Kato shot an excellent 2-under 34 for low gross. Mike Erickson was low net at 31.5.

The men at Beaver Creek Golf Course did get their round in last Thursday. BCGC had high team with 24.5 points. The team was made up of Craig Miller, Justin french, Rob Pitkanen and AJ Keller. Kellen Malone and Kaare Engebretson shared low gross, each shooting 39, while Pitkanen was low net at 32.

Finally, tournaments are right around the corner. The season kicks off with the annual Golfing For a Cure Tournament at prairie Farms June 1. I'll have more about this tourney and some of the new things the organization is doing in the next From Tee to Green.
