Local Golf Report: Great to see the great Nick Obie

From Tee to Green

The weather was a little shaky, but the local golf tournament schedule rolled on last weekend.

Saturday, Prairie Farms Golf Course hosted the annual NALSF Tournament, a four-person scramble with proceeds going to help MSU-Northern athletics.

More than 20 teams took part in the tournament, which was played in cool, windy conditions, but those conditions didn’t seem to bother the Erickson Insurance Group squad, which grossed an incredible 55, which is 17 under par. Net score is the deciding factor in the tournament, and the team netted a 50.5. The team was composed of Mike Erickson, Jeremy Jensen, Kyle Miller and Scott Miller. Great shooting, boys. Job well done. Second place went to the Northern Montana Hospital team with a 58 gross, and third was MSU-N Wrestling with a net score of 52.7.

The tournament schedule at Prairie Farms continues this Saturday with the annual Natalie Patrick Foundation Tournament.

In league golf last week at Prairie Farms, Tire Rama scored 23.5 points to earn high team Tuesday night. The team was made up of Jeremy and Jeff Jensen, Buzz Pizzini and Lunar Evans. Jeremy Jensen was low gross with a one-under 35, while Jake Myers was low net with a 29.5.

Last Wednesday saw HUB Insurance and Master Sports tie for high team with 22 points each. HUB was made up of Chad Edgar, Steve Mariani, Eric Wilting and Justin Kallenberger. Master Sports was composed of Dave and Doug Sheppard, Barry Kato and Jim Kirkpatrick. Doug Sheppard was low gross with an even-par 36, while Hoover Peterson was low net at 30.5.

This week marks the end of the first half of the regular season for men’s league at Prairie Farms. The top four teams from each night will advance to the playoffs.

Last Thursday night in women’s league, Northern Montana Hospital was high team with 23.5 points. The team was made up of Patti Nault, Terri Earl, Marry Pizzini and Carol Culp. Sarah Spangler was low gross with an excellent 39, and Lorrie Keller was low net at 27.5.

Lastly, I thought I should mention that one of Havre’s golfing legends was home last week, and I was glad I got to see him. Lest we forget, few, if any, golfers have ever been as good, and as talented as Nick Obie, and he certainly had the single best amateur career these parts have ever seen. And while life has certainly changed for Nick, as he doesn’t get to spend every waking second on a golf course anymore, I hear the man can still blister a course like only he could.

It was great to see you, Nick.
