Fire caught quickly, extinguished at Rocky Boy

Quick response from several organizations on Rocky Boy’s Indian Reservation Sunday contained a wildfire to less than seven acres in the Parker School area at the east edge of the reservation near Taylor Road.

Chippewa Cree Natural Resources Fire Management Officer Jason Lodgepole said a call about a grass fire quickly spreading north up the hill into the timber came in at 5:20 p.m. and the first engine arrived on scene at 5:31 p.m. As subsequent engines and personnel arrived, they got out in front of the flames and stopped the spread at 6.6 acres.

Lodgepole said the that fire was contained by about 8 p.m. and mop up completed by about 10 p.m. A crew stayed on site to monitor the fire.

The area had about 1-inch of snow by this morning and the moisture was helping with any hot spots, but it also makes the ground hazardous for a final survey of potential hot spots, he added. Personnel will continue monitor the area until the ground dries enough for them to walk the burn site for a final mop up.
