2021 Frontier Football Preview: WR/TE

Pass catchers will be fun to watch in the Frontier

The skill positions get the glory in football. There's no denying that, but it's often times very well deserved, and when it comes to the pass catchers, the Frontier Conference always seems to produce plenty of guys who get the glory.

And while some of those pass catchers haven't played meaningful games in almost two years due to COVID-19, it doesn't change how good they'll be this fall.

Returning from the spring season is a pair of stellar receivers from the College of Idaho. While the Yotes are known for their running game, Hunter Jaurez and Isaiah Veal are a lethal tandem for C of I's passing attack. In four games last spring, the duo combined for 478 yards and five scores.

Rocky Mountain College also returns a three-time All-Conference standout in Lucas Overton, who is flanked by Donoven Sellgren. Overton played in just two games in the spring, but in 2019 he caught 67 passes for 790 yards and three touchdowns. In the spring, Sellgren caught 23 passes for 400 yards and three touchdowns, including a 95-yarder.

Though they haven't played in nearly two seasons, Montana Western has a pair of the best receivers in the conference coming back in Nate Simkins and Trey Mounts. Both were All-Conference in 2019, with Simkins hauling in 55 passes for 830 yards and a league-high 13 scores. Mounts caught 33 balls for 633 yards and five more TDs for the stellar Jon Jund.

Speaking of All-Conference, no receiver may be as anxious to get back on the field as Montana Tech's Trevor Hoffman. Hoffman was the top receiver in the league in 2019, catching 52 passes for 1,018 yards and eight touchdowns, while averaging 101.8 yards per game. Kiley Kaprera will also be one to watch for the Orediggers.

The Montana State University-Northern Lights have players to watch as well. Head coach Andrew Rolin knows a thing or two about receivers, and he's got some good ones, led by junior Jake Horner who will be a three-year starter when the season starts. Tyrese Rios also gained valuable experience last spring and will be a threat in the Northern passing game as well.

Rolin also says he has a strong tight end in sophomore Devin Carmona.

When it comes to tight ends, Carroll College has produced some monsters over the years, and the Fighting Saints, who won the spring season title, have a good one in Tony Collins, who is a two-time All-Conference performer for head coach Troy Purcell.

Jaylen Taggart at Montana Tech is another strong tight end to watch this season, while C of I should have standouts at that position, too.

Editor's Note: This is the fourth in the Havre Daily News' series of the top returning players in the Frontier Conference. Next up will be the linebackers in Wednesday's HDN.
