Blue Pony wrestling finishes 2021 with CMR Holiday Classic

With just one more tournament before the holiday break, the Havre High wrestling teams wanted to wrestle well at the CMR Holiday Classic in Great Falls this past weekend. In their biggest tournament of the season, the Blue Ponies did just that as they finished in the top 10.

“I think we wrestled pretty well. Still got some things to improve on but we did a pretty good job,” HHS head coach Beau LaSalle said.

The Ponies scored 126 points to take eighth in the tournament out of over 50 teams competing during the weekend. Billings West won the tournament with 231.5 points. The HHS girls team also competed in their own tournament in Great Falls this weekend. The Ponies scored 48 points to place tenth in the tournament out of more than 25 teams. Billings Senior High School won that tournament with 209.5 points.

Several Ponies placed in their brackets over the course of the weekend. Senior Orion Thivierge continued his strong start to the season as he placed second wrestling in the 170-pound weight class. After he received a bye in the first round, he pinned Three Forks’ Bruno Ferreyra 2:21 into the match. In the third round, Thivierge again won by pin 21 seconds into his match against Spencer Gibbs from Malta.

In the quarterfinal, Thivierge defeated Glasgow’s Damien Nesbitt, 8-4. In the semifinal, he won in sudden victory over Shawn Miller of Billings Senior High School to advance to the championship match.

Wrestling at 182 pounds, Kale VanCampen finished third in the tournament. After a bye in the first round, VanCampen pinned Dorian White of Great Falls CMR 42 seconds into the match. In the third round, he won by pin 1:24 into his match against Jefferson’s Braeden Jones.

After a loss in the quarterfinal, VanCampen went on a run through the consolation bracket. He stayed alive for a third-place finish with a 1-0 decision over Lewistown’s Jett Boyce and a 2-1 decision over Laurel’s Cole Younger. He then won by major decision by a score of 16-3 over Kristopher Musick of Missoula Sentinel. In the third-place match, VanCampen won by a 4-3 decision over Camryn Mears of Malta.

Senior Randy Tommerup finished eighth wrestling at 205 pounds. In the consolation bracket, he won, 12-2, for a major decision over Chester-Joplin-Inverness wrestler Sebastian Mansfield. Tommerup then won, 13-3, for another major decision over Kalispell’s T.J. Glannon. Tommerup also pinned Miles City’s Jaiden Gibson 2:02 into the match.

Tristian Stygles also placed eighth for the Ponies in the 145-pound weight class. He started the bracket with a pin 27 seconds into the match against Trent King of Harlem. In the consolation bracket, he won by pin 4:40 into the match against Braden Torpen of Columbia Falls. Stygles then won by medical forfeit over Shawn Gilkerson of Malta.

Stygles continued to make a run through the consolation bracket. In his next two matches, he pinned Belgrade’s Oden Currier and Gallatin’s Cooper McGovern. He then earned a 8-5 decision over Cut Bank’s Matt Larson.

Many other Ponies won matches throughout the weekend. Wrestling at 113 pounds, Matthew Lemer won by pin 42 seconds into a match against Isaiah Goche of Miles City. At 132 pounds, Jack Gillen won by pin 1:30 into his match against David Bergstad of Great Falls CMR. At 138 pounds, Jacob Kunz pinned Whitefish’s Caleb Fleming and Hamilton’s Joey Taylor in the first two matches of the bracket.

In his first match in the 152-pound bracket, Riley Pleninger won by pin 33 seconds into his match against Chinook’s Drake Berreth. After a loss, he went on a run through the consolation bracket. He won by pins over Parker Ripple of White Sulphur Springs and Shaun Billingsley of Missoula Big Sky and then won by medical forfeit over Henry Bennetts of Whitefish. Pleninger then won by pin 4:38 into his match against Mason Spahr of Great Falls CMR.

Kendall Pleninger also won some matches in the 160-pound bracket. He opened the tournament by pinning Andrew Schoenen of Great Falls/MSDB. In the consolation bracket, he pinned three straight opponents in Circle’s Jaron Taylor, Wolf Point’s Jordan Davis and Belgrade’s Hunter Rowan.

Several girls team wrestlers also placed for the Ponies this past weekend. Clara Laird finished second wrestling at 205 pounds. She started the bracket with a pin 1:05 into the match against Butte’s Ashlee Wilcox. She won again by pin 40 seconds into her match against Celia Jaeger of Billings Senior High School. In the semifinal, she won by pin 5:33 into the match against Cascade’s Skye Smith.

Maleigha Fuzesy also finished second as she wrestled at 132 pounds. After receiving a bye to start the bracket, she won by pin 46 seconds into her match against Makayla Lewis of Billings Skyview. In the quarterfinal, she won by sudden victory over Glacier’s Brady Boll. In the semifinal, Fuzesy won by pin 2:48 into the match against Glacier’s Jessalyn Hewitt.

The Ponies now head into their winter break after competing in three tournaments this month to start the season. While he knows the best is still yet to come, LaSalle believes they are beginning to round into form.

“I think we’re progressing the way we’re supposed to,” LaSalle said. “You don’t want to wrestle your best competition before state so we’re just continuing to get better every week.”

The Ponies will return to the mats Jan. 7 when they head to the Cut Bank Invite.
