Joseph was born August 16, 1938, in Rugby, North Dakota, to Louie and Elizabeth (Schmidt) Bachmeier. He was raised and attended school in Pierce County, North Dakota, and attended one year of vo-tech in Fargo. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1961 and was honorably discharged in 1963.

After the military, he returned to North Dakota, where he married Lillian Kremer February 8, 1964, in Balta, North Dakota. The couple moved to Havre, Montana, in 1974 for a job opportunity at Havre Implement. He retired in 2000 after 26 years.

Joseph and Lillian have five children. They were a busy family, raising their children and attending their activities. They were members of St. Jude Thaddeus Catholic Church and, in his spare time, Joseph enjoyed working in his wood shop. To some this may seem daunting, however, Joe made it look easy. He made beautiful cabinetry, shelving, desks, curio cabinets, cradles, rocking chairs and many other items. For Christmas gifts the children and grandchildren often looked forward to receiving something he had made special for them.

Joe's talents didn't end there, he was also a master metal worker, and he played the saxophone and clarinet in his earlier years. He was a devoted man to his family, his church and to the Knights of Columbus organization.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Nick, Pete and Vince; and one sister, Katie.

Joseph is survived by his wife of 58 years, Lillian Bachmeier; two daughters, Denise (Richard) Adamson of Helena, MT and Gail (Paul) Rainey of Forsyth, Montana; three sons, Steve (Christine) Bachmeier of Manhattan, MT, Ken (Gayle) Bachmeier of Livingston, MT, and Randy (Christine) Bachmeier of Havre, Montana; two sisters, Clara Fixen of Williston and Bea Welk of Rugby, ND; one brother, John Bachmeier of California; 22 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
