Northern rodeo teams begin season in Powell, Wyoming

While most eyes have been on the starts of the Montana State University-Northern football and volleyball seasons, there are several other collegiate sports beginning their seasons on the Hi-Line. This past weekend, the MSU-N rodeo teams began their fall season.

The MSU-N rodeo teams began with a rodeo hosted by Northwest Community College in Powell, Wyoming, this past Friday and Saturday. In the women's rodeo, the MSU-N team finished second with a total of 315 points. Montana State University won the rodeo with a score of 469 total points while Montana Tech came in third.

The MSU-N men's team finished fourth in its rodeo with 252 total points. Montana Western won the men's rodeo with 681 total points with Tech coming in second and Dawson Community College finishing third.

Many MSU-N riders performed well in Powell to start the season. Garrett Cunningham finished second in saddle bronc riding with a score of 56.0. Hance Three Irons took second as the team roping header with a time of 9.0.

A pair of MSU-N riders did well as the team rope heelers. For the men's team, Rope Three Irons finished second with a time of 9.0. For the women's team, Jill Marcenko took third with a time of 10.4.

Several other MSU-N cowgirls placed high in their events over the weekend. Tied for first in the breakaway roping event, Taylissa Lytle and Georgie Orahood both posted a time of 3.0 for MSU-N. Brittney Cox took third in barrel racing with a time of 18.40. In goat tying, Kenda Statham finished tied for fifth with a time of 10.5. Her teammate Mikenna Schauer finished seventh in the event with a time of 11.2.

After completing their first rodeo of the season, the MSU-N rodeo teams will next compete this Friday and Saturday in a rodeo in Glendive hosted by Dawson Community College.
