Club, schools participate in Red Ribbon Week

Havre Daily News staff

The nation’s largest and longest-running drug-use prevention campaign is running again next week, with activities in Havre to help youth and children “celebrate life; live drug-free.”

National Red Ribbon week starts Sunday and Havre schools and the Boys & Girls Cub of the Hi-Line have activities for local students and residents.

National Family Partnership, formerly the National Federation of Parents for Drug Free Youth, was established as a grassroots, nonprofit organization in 1980 by a handful of concerned and determined parents who were convinced they should begin to play a leadership role in drug prevention, the organization’s website says. Since its founding 30 years ago, NFP has devoted its efforts to the well-being of youth. Today, NFP is a national leader in drug prevention education and advocacy. It’s website says the partnership’s mission is to lead and support the nation’s families and communities in nurturing the full potential of healthy, drug-free youth.

A release from the Boys & Girls Club of the Hi-Line lists some things people can do to support the effort:

• Wear a red ribbon to demonstrate support for a healthy, drug-free lifestyle.

• Invite family or friends over for a drug-free get together.

• Take time to talk to children about tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs.

• Display a red ribbon, banner or poster in the window.

• Write a letter to the editor about the benefits of living drug free.

• Remember, the simplest activity of all ... share a smile and a word of praise with someone you know who is living a healthy, drug-free life.

The club also is inviting people to share a night at its facility at 500 First Avenue Wednesday from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

The night includes a free dinner, games and activities and costumes are encouraged!

“Join in some activities with your children,” the release said. “Relax and have fun”
