Northstars eliminated in state tournament

After losing its opening game of the Class A State Tournament in Laurel, the Havre Northstars American Legion baseball club was looking to stay alive in an elimination game Thursday morning. But against the Butte Miners, the Northstars suffered a 14-1 loss to end their run in the state tournament.

The Miners got rolling early in the top of the first inning. Early in the inning, a pair of Miners scored on a wild pitch and then stole home to give Butte a 2-0 lead. A single then drove in another run to give Butte a 3-0 lead to start the game.

The Miners continued to add onto their lead in the top of the second. After a single to open the inning, a Miner scored on a sacrifice fly. Later in the inning, a single drove in another run to give Butte a 5-0 lead.

Even in the top of the third, the Miners did not slow down. With two runners on, a Miner hit a home run to center field to extend the lead to 8-0. Then in the top of the fourth, a two-run home run to left further pushed the lead to 10-0. Later in the inning, a double drove in another run to make it an 11-0 game.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Northstars finally got on the scoreboard. With a runner on third base, Colter Solomon hit a single to center to drive in the run to make it an 11-1 game. But the Miners scored another three runs in the top of the fifth to extend their lead to 14-1.

The Northstars failed to score in the bottom of the fifth, resulting in the game ending by run rule. As a team, the Northstars finished the game with only four hits. Drake Berreth went 2-2 at the plate while Solomon recorded the lone RBI of the game for Havre.

On the mound, starting pitcher Tanner Delarosa was given the loss. In 1.2 innings pitched, he allowed five hits, five earned runs and three walks. With the loss, the Northstars finished the state tournament with an 0-2 record and fell to an overall record of 43-18-1 this season.

While the Northstars failed to win a game in the state tournament, they will get to play in and host the Northwest Regional Tournament to end the season. The Northwest Regionals will begin Aug. 4 at Legion Field.
