Fred was born November 21, 1935, in Stillwater, MN, to Fred W. and Dorothy (Carner) Hanson, Sr. He was raised in Stillwater, attending school there, through the eighth grade. At that time, the family relocated to Cut Bank, MT, where Fred worked for Glacier Motors as a body man. In the mid-1950s, the family relocated once again, this time to Havre, MT, and there Fred began working for the Great Northern Railroad as a truck driver, a position he held until his retirement in the late 1990's. He married Mary Ann Linie in 1958, and the couple had four children whom they raised in Havre. For many years, Fred's day job was owning and operating Fred's Frontier Service Station, which Fred and Mary Ann sold prior to retirement.

Fred was a friendly man who enjoyed camping, tools, and cars, especially the mid-1960's Ford Mustangs. He loved to tinker, and drinking coffee with his auto mechanic and body repair friends was a favorite pastime. He adored Mary Ann and was extremely proud of his four children, four grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ann; parents, Fred and Dorothy Hanson Sr .; and siblings, Dave, Chuck, Betty, and Margaret.

Fred is survived by his children, James Hanson, Barbara (Joe) Schend, Donald (Shannon) Hanson, and Robert (June) Hanson, all of Havre; four grandchildren, Jordan (Kim) Schend, Lindsey (Ben) Mader, Brennan (Nikita) Hanson, and Trey Hanson, all of Havre; and great-grandchildren, Chase and Peyton Mader, Tallen and Taicen Schend, and Dean Hanson.
