Skylights win again, Dawgs edge Lights

The Montana State University-Northern women's basketball team is now in the thick of the Frontier Conference race as February approaches. That's thanks in large part to another big win in the Armory Gymnasium.

Northern beat Montana Western 69-51 in Havre Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs came out hot, as Box Elder's Joelnell Momberg scored nine of their 10 points.

They outscored the Skylights 17-15 in the first quarter. But Northern turned the game around in the second quarter, as Ryley Kehr hit a jumper to end the half pushing the score 33-26. The Skylights continued the momentum in the second half, as they won the third and fourth quarters. It was a dominant finale 20 minutes for the Skylights, who improved to 4-3 in the Frontier.

The Skylights were led by Shyan Krass who had 19 points and six rebounds. Ryley Kehr went 8-12 from the field with 19 points. Savannah Toms went 5-8 from the field with 10 points. Taya Trottier led the team in rebounds with 10.

The Bulldogs were led by Shainy Mack who had 14 points going 5-17 from the field. Jordan Sweeney added 11 points, six assists, and six rebounds. Joelnell Momberg added 11 points.

Things didn't go as well for Northern in the men's game as the Lights fell to Western 66-58 in the Armory. The Lights were able to push the lead to seven at the beginning of the game, however, the Bulldogs came down and dunked the ball to go up by one going into halftime, 33-32. The Lights shot 50 percent from the field and 27 percent from the three in the first half. Montana Western shot 47 percent from the field and 3-5 from behind the arc.

Northern took the lead by as much as eight right out of halftime. The Bulldogs came back, though, as they tied the game with 7:00 left in the game. They pushed the lead to nine points with 2:35 left. Western hit their free throws down the stretch to ice the game, and beat the Lights for the second time this season.

The Lights were led by Dae'Kwon Watson who had 13 points, six rebounds, and five assists. J.J. Thomas went 6-8 from the field with 13 points and eight rebounds. Zackry Martinez added 10 points. The Bulldogs were led by Abi Adedo who went 8-17 from the field with 23 points and six rebounds. Jalyn Stepney was 60 percent from the field with 16 points and nine rebounds. Kayden Toldson added six rebounds.

The tough loss saw Northern fall to 1-6 in the Frontier.

Both the Lights, and Skylights host Rocky Mountain College Thursday night, before heading to Providence Saturday.
