Several years ago, students at Hays-Lodge Pole High School took state Sen. Jonathan Windy Boy's challenge to get involved in Montana politics When Windy Boy attended a class, students wanted to know why there were St. Patrick's Day and Columbus Day to honor the Irish and Italians, but there was no holiday to honor Montana's Native Americans. The Irish and Italians had lobbied in behalf of their days, the senator said. No one had lobbied for a Native American day. So the students began a letter-writing campaign that morphed...

  • Our View: Feds actions against AP are outrageous

    Tristan

For more than two months, the federal government has been spying on The Associated Press. Records were seized on 20 phone lines going in and out of the AP's bureaus in Washington, D.C., New York City and Hartford, Conn. The unprecedented snooping into the private affairs of the news cooperative is totalitarian in nature and an absolute outrage. Gary Pruitt, AP's president and chief executive officer, has demanded the information be handed over to the AP and destroy all copies. We second that call and add that the Department...

  • Our View: Sobriety checks will be an effective deterrent

    Tristan

Havre Police have undertaken a new program to keep suspected or convicted drunken drivers off the streets. Under the program, people who have been arrested or convicted of drunken driving can be ordered by the judge to show up at the police station to undergo sobriety tests. If it turns out they have been imbibing, they can be jailed right away. But officials in other counties where the program has been tried say that rarely happens. The threat of incarceration keeps them dry. The program is good for everyone on all sides....
