  • Frontier Notebook: A shocker, huge stats and a wide open race

    George Ferguson

To say Carroll College has been great is putting it mildly. In fact, there are few adjectives to describe just how Carroll has dominated the Frontier Conference over the last 12 years. And that's why it's extremely unusual to be writing about a Carroll loss, in conference play, for the second year in a row. It took from October of 2006 (when MSU-Northern beat the Saints in Havre), until September of 2011 (when Eastern Oregon won in Helena) for Carroll to lose two Frontier... Full story

  • Concrete at Beaver Creek cabins tabled at board meeting

    Tim Leeds

A heavy topic rose to the top of a discussion at the Hill County Park Board meeting this week — concrete. Beaver Creek Park Superintendent Chad Edgar told the park board that a cabin owner wanted to make improvements to a cabin — which met the requirements of the park — but also wanted to add a concrete patio. Edgar asked for direction about what can be allowed for pouring concrete at cabins, where the intent of the park is to maintain a rustic front. The board agreed, after a sometimes heated discussion, to table the quest...

The annual Democratic fundraiser, renamed the Pasma-Peck Dinner in honor of two Havre Democratic powerhouses, Jim Pasma and Rep. Ray Peck, starts Friday at 4:30 p. m. with a social hour at the Havre Eagles Club. After the prime rib d...

    Zach White

Havre Public Schools Superintendent Andy Carlson interpreted the districts' recently released Adequate Yearly Progress results for the Board of Trustees at its Tuesday night meeting. The district failed to meet the rapidly increasing standards set up by the No Child Left Behind act of 2002, which will require 100 percent of students to be proficient or better in math and reading by 2014. Several parts of the school system did achieve "safe harbor" for their performance in other standards, like attendance and graduation... Full story

  • Havre's generosity keeps soup kitchen going

    Tristan

Editor: I want to commend the people of Havre for their generosity. I have seen it over and over again as neighbors help neighbors and reach out in some special way to those with needs within our community. What specifically motivates me to write this letter at this time is that during the Great Northern Fair I manned a booth in the Commercial Building for the Feed My Sheep Soup Kitchen. I had many enjoyable conversations with people who expressed an interest in the work of the Soup Kitchen. This letter is to publicly say tha... Full story

  • Fed unveils bold, open-ended steps to aid economy

    MARTIN CRUTSINGER, AP Economics Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) — Alarmed by the chronically weak U.S. economy, the Federal Reserve launched an aggressive new effort Thursday to boost the stock market and make borrowing cheaper for years to come. And it made clear it won't stop there and is ready to try other stimulative measures if hiring doesn't pick up. Stock prices rocketed up in approval. But economists said the Fed's plans to buy mortgage bonds for as long as it deems necessary and to keep interest rates at record lows until mid-2015 — six months longer than pre...
