  • Bill aims to restrict law-enforcement searches

    Tristan

HELENA (AP) — Lawmakers are considering a measure that would require law-enforcement officers to have a reasonable suspicion before they can conduct strip or body cavity searches. The bill would allow such searches only in situations where a person is suspected of a crime, of carrying a weapon or of carrying contraband. Democratic Sen. Anders Blewett of Great Falls says Senate Bill 194 would provide needed clarification of when police can conduct searches. He presented the measure Friday in the House Judiciary Committee. M...

  • House panel hears bill to decriminalize gay sex

    Kathryn Haake

HELENA — A House panel heard a measure Friday that would remove an obsolete Montana law that criminalizes gay sex by labeling it a deviate sexual behavior on par with bestiality. Senate Bill 107 seeks to remove that language from the existing statutes, reflecting a 1997 Montana Supreme Court ruling that said the law prohibiting gay sex is unconstitutional. The measure to strike the law has already passed the state Senate in a 39-11 vote, but now is before the House Judiciary Committee — the same panel that killed a sim...

    JAMES MacPHERSON, Associated Press

BISMARCK, N.D — North Dakota on Friday moved closer to adopting what would be the most restrictive abortion laws in the country, with lawmakers sending the Republican governor measures that could set the state up for a costly legal battle over the U.S. Supreme Court decision that legalized the procedure. The North Dakota Senate overwhelmingly approved two anti-abortion bills Friday, one banning abortions as early as six weeks into a pregnancy and another prohibiting women from having the procedure because a fetus has a g...

  • Daniel Horton Column: It's been one incredible run by the Big Sandy boys sports teams

    Daniel Horton

I know that the football season, as well as the basketball season did not pan out they way Big Sandy had hoped. Both sports ended in heartbreaking defeats for their coaches, fans, and players. But as an outsider looking in, it is hard to say that it wasn't an amazing 2012-2013 run for the Pioneers. Obviously the goal for any prep athletic program is to win state titles. Big Sandy running back Jessey Bailey, left, throws a pass in the Class C Six-Man semifinals back in November in Big Sandy. In boys sports this year, Big...

  • Rocky Boy rancher calls for permanent livestock programs

    Tim Leeds

A Rocky Boy rancher testified in Washington Thursday about the need for Congress to give some disaster assistance to livestock producers. "We've had it all. We had the blizzard of 2010-2011 in which we lost numerous heads of livestock, and that following spring we had unprecedented rainfall events that actually completely changed the landscape of our ranch and neighboring ranches," LaSalle testified before the Senate Agricultural Committee. "So we went from one extreme to the other within last year, and now we are at the...

  • The point not being zombies

    Pam Burke

This week, KRTV in Great Falls and a handful of other television and radio stations broadcasted an unscheduled emergency alert system warning to the public about a zombie attack. Yes, an all-out zombie attack with the dead rising from their graves and attacking the live folks. The alert came courtesy of unknown hackers who targeted stations who hadn't bothered to change their default password in their computer systems. As funny as all that is, that's not what I'm here to talk...

  • Abortion foes say voters may trump Constitution

    MATT GOURAS,Associated Press

HELENA (AP) — Abortion foes seeking to expand the state's parental notification law say voter-backed laws can trump the Montana Constitution. The debate played significantly in a Friday debate over plans to rewrite and expand a recently-passed ballot measure requiring minors under 16 years old to receive parental permission for an abortion. House Bill 391 increases the age requiring consent to all minors under 18 years old. It also requires both parent and teen to receive and sign a notification form about the dangers of t...

  • House cmte hears testimony on death penalty bill

    Tristan

HELENA (AP) — Members of a House committee heard emotional testimony on a bill that would end the death penalty and replace it with life in prison without parole to save taxpayers the expense of such cases and prevent the possible death of a wrongfully convicted person. Marietta Jager Lane supports the bill even after her 7-year-old daughter was kidnapped in 1973, repeatedly raped, killed and dismembered. She told the House Judiciary Committee on Thursday that her daughter deserves a more honorable memorial than the s...

The H. Earl Clack Museum Board Monday discussed several items to address in the next year, including one that appears to be resolved: replacing the elderly computer used in the museum. Board Chair Judi Dritshulas said it appears a donation to replace the computer, with which museum manager John Bruington has said he has been having problems, likely will be made in February. Area wrestling teams had a strong showing at the Choteau Classic this past weekend, but one Hi-Line power was absent. The third-ranked Harlem Wildcats opted not to make the trip to Choteau for one of Class B-C's biggest tournaments, due to the hazardous winter storm which swept through the area last weekend. Meanwhile, Chinook finished in 10th place with 72 points, while Big Sandy scored 35 points and Chester/J-I scored 28. Choteau racked up 294.5 points to easily win its own...

On Friday, the 10C Chester-J/I Hawks were the only local team to take the floor. But the Hawks weren't able to grab the home win, as Heart Butte defeated C/J-I 55-50 in Chester. At home, C/J-I blasted the warriors 57-16. The Hawks raced out to a 38-12 halftime lead, then held the warriors to...
