  • Remember the whole story about Thatcher

    Norman Bernstein

Ronald Reagan, Margaret Thatcher's partner in foreign affairs, and her mirror image in domestic affairs, was president of the United States from 1981 to 1989, during which time the U.S. national debt tripled, from $997 billion to $2.85 trillion. His administration reduced taxes on the wealthiest Americans by 60 percent, ordered vast increases in military spending, attacked labor unions across the board, caused a reduction in hourly wages, a rise in unemployment as unskilled jobs disappeared, and forced more and more wives... Full story

  • Our View: Legislature should OK Northern building now

    Tristan

It seems like the standard story. The proposed auto-diesel tech building at Montana State University-Northern is on a roller coaster ride. Earlier in the 2013 legislative session, it appeared it was going on a fast track. Although two Hi-Line lawmakers, Rep. Kris Hansen, R-Havre, and Rep.Wendy Warburton, R-Chinook, favored approving the building on a stand-alone piece of legislation, many others thought it should be part of a statewide package that would attract lawmaker support from throughout the state. Then there was the q...

He's asked questions that aren't usually asked and made comments that are not usually made — at least not at City Council meetings. If Dow were to compile a list of the 1,000 things h...

  • Native language preservation bill gets OK

    John Kelleher

Rep. Clarena Brockie became emotional when she spoke on the floor of the Montana House on Saturday in favor of a bill to help preserve Native American languages. The Harlem Democrat broke into tears when she described how her relatives, including her grandchildren, had a more positive self-image when they started to learn the languages of their ancestors. Older generations were prohibited from speaking native languages, Brockie said. Keeping the language alive is an important part of preserving native cultures. Brockie was... Full story

  • Bipartisan move partially restores school bill

    Matt Gouras

HELENA — A bipartisan coalition in the House is restoring part of the session's big school funding bill. Senate Bill 175 is the result of a multi-year effort by various interest groups to improve the school funding system. It also seeks to reduce the burden on local property tax payers with the help of natural resource money. Conservatives opposed to the cost of the bill used their majority in committee to dramatically alter the measure last week. But Democrats joined a group of Republicans Monday on the House floor to r...

  • Senate rejects doctor-assisted suicide bill

    KATHRYN HAAKE, Associated Press

HELENA (AP) — The Montana Senate has rejected a measure that would have made it illegal for doctors and caregivers to help terminally ill people kill themselves. House Bill 505 was struck down Monday in a 27-23 floor vote after senators removed it from the Senate Judiciary Committee, where it was stuck after failing to get a majority of support. The Montana Supreme Court ruled in 2009 that nothing in state law prohibits assisted suicide, effectively making Montana the third state to allow it. The Legislature previously f...

  • Bipartisan 'dark money' bill hits roadblock

    Tristan

HELENA (AP) — A bipartisan measure backed by Gov. Steve Bullock hoping to force more disclosure on money in politics is hitting a roadblock. A Republican-controlled House committee tabled Senate Bill 375 on Monday. Supporters who argue it is needed to crack down on so-called dark money political groups were hoping the measure could be resuscitated with a longshot vote later on the House floor. Opponents argue anonymity is an important part of political speech in the country, and say the measure won't really solve any p... Full story

ALEXANDRA OLSON, FRANK BAJAK, Associated Press

CARACAS, Venezuela — Hugo Chavez's hand-picked successor, Nicolas Maduro, has officially won Venezuela's presidential election by a stunningly narrow margin that highlights rising discontent over problems ranging from crime to power blackouts. His rival demanded a recount, portending more headaches for a country shaken by the death of its dominating leader. One key Chavista leader expressed dismay over the outcome of Sunday's election, which was supposed to cement the self-styled "Bolivarian Revolution" of their beloved p...

  • It's time for the Montana Senate to pick itself up, dust itself off

    Sen. Greg Jergeson

Friday, April 5, the Senate found itself mired in an angry dispute between the two parties. The majority was seen to be railroading several pieces of legislation in a manner that disregarded proper rules of public notice and procedure. The minority reacted by attempting a little-used parliamentary motion called "Call of the Senate." The situation deteriorated. Greg Jergeson As dean of the Montana Senate, an institution that I revere beyond measure, disappointment is the only word that can describe my feelings about the... Full story

  • Three Havre boys named Central A All-Conference

    Daniel Horton

The Havre High boys basketball team entered the season as a very young and inexperienced squad. But after consistent growth throughout the season, the Blue Ponies were able to shock some teams, as well as make a solid run at the Central A divisional tournament in Great Falls. Havre High freshman Dane Warp, right, was named Central A First-Team All-Conference after leading the Blue Ponies in scoring this season. Warp was one of three Ponies to earn Central A honors for this season. And though the season ended at the divisional...

  • Confusion surrounds assisted suicide bill

    Rick Blevins

Editor: The Montana Legislature is considering the question of physician assisted suicide. The Senate has rejected an Oregon style bill that would have legalized such a practice. The House has passed House Bill 505, which will end the confusion about assisted suicide in Montana by stating it is illegal. I am in favor of this bill and wish to correct misconceptions recently expressed in a community forum article published within the past two weeks in the Havre Daily News. HB 505 seeks to clarify the relevant law, which has... Full story

  • Brat: It's the new adorable

    Pam Burke

My dog Cooper is about 50 percent highly opinionated, opportunistic brat. I wish I were more like him. That's possibly, probably, most likely wrong of me, but to my critics, I say: Whatever. To be honest, I've been called a lot of things, and more than just a few of those things weren't very nice, but of all the names, adjectives, adverbs and cuss words I've been stuck with, brat isn't one of them. Weird, right? Cooper makes a compelling argument for being a brat, though. If y...
