  • Information sought in Havre-area game wasting case

    Updated Feb 20, 2014

Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks officials are seeking information from the public about the illegal wasting of deer meat in rural Hill County. Havre-area Warden Andy Fuerst said a headless deer carcass was found left in dumpsters on the St. Joe Road about nine miles north of Havre on Feb. 4. The carcass has been skinned out and mold was on the meat, meaning it likely was left hanging too long somewhere before being illegally discarded. Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Fuerst directly at 406-262-2407...

  • 9C Tournament Extra: Molly Herron, Big Sandy

    George Ferguson|Updated Feb 20, 2014

Big Sandy senior Molly Herron might play in a small town, but she comes from a big basketball family. In actuality, Herron has two basketball families. She has her Pioneer teammates, who together bleed purple and gold. But she also has her sisters, who have either already played for the Pioneers, or are about to. In other words, for Herron, basketball and family go hand-in-hand. And even though she followed in the footsteps of older sisters, Kaci and Josi, Herron has carved...

  • Bears roar into girls semifinals

    George Ferguson|Updated Feb 20, 2014

No matter how a team performs, no matter its record during the regular season, the first day of the District 9C tournament always provides a fresh start. That’s how the Turner girls basketball team was looking at Wednesday’s opening game of the 2014 District 9C girls basketball tournament at the Havre High gymnasium. But the Box Elder Bears had other ideas. The Bears made the opener more of the same as they raced past the Tornadoes 76-30, setting up a showdown with top...

  • Skylights aim for strong finish against DSU, RMC

    George Ferguson|Updated Feb 20, 2014

It’s been quite some time since the Montana State University-Northern women’s basketball team has gone this deep into the season holding on to an NAIA national ranking. And it’s been nine years since the Skylights last made the NAIA national tournament. But playing at home in the final two games of the regular season, the No. 22 Skylights (8-6, 18-8) have a chance to end that drought and keep the national ranking they’ve held on to since January. However, in order to do that...

    George Ferguson|Updated Feb 20, 2014

Both games tip at 8 inside the Armory Gymnasium, and both games will have huge implications on Northern’s postseason aspir...

  • Thunderbirds soar into semifinals

    Daniel Horton|Updated Feb 20, 2014

In the opening round of the District 9C tournament, Big Sandy put up a good fight until the bitter end. But unfortunately for the Pioneers, the Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds proved to be too tough of an opponent and ran away with the win. Playing for a chance to get into tonight’s semifinals, the Thunderbirds and Pioneers tipped off Wednesday night at the HHS gymnasium. But it wasn’t long before the Thunderbirds were clearly in control, eventually defeating Big Sandy 50-...

  • Big Sandy girls cruise past Hays-Lodge Pole

    Daniel Horton|Updated Feb 20, 2014

There was a trend of dominating wins and lopsided losses on the first day of the District 9C tournament in Havre, and Big Sandy and Hays Lodge-Pole were on opposite ends of the spectrum. In girls action, the Pioneers defeated the Thunderbirds 65-17 Wednesday in the first round. And like so many of the other blowouts, the Pioneers were in complete control right from the start. Big Sandy won the tip and raced off to an impressive 28-0 lead after the first quarter and a 38-10...

  • The Knight Touch

    George Ferguson|Updated Feb 20, 2014

The North Star Knights and Turner Tornadoes have been pretty evenly matched all season long. And though the prospect of playing Box Elder in the District 9C semifinals was a daunting one, both teams badly wanted that chance, and they played like it against each other. In the opening boys game of the 2014 District 9C tournament Wednesday afternoon at the Havre High gymnasium, the fourth-seeded Knights held off a strong charge from the fifth-seeded Tornadoes, winning 51-42 and...
