  • Letter to the Editor - Park board chair committee comments misguided

    Updated Apr 21, 2023

Editor, This comment has to do with the article about the April 3 Hill County Park Board meeting that was published in the April 5 edition of Havre Daily News. I was unable to attend that particular meeting, but going off the article, I was a little surprised and a bit confused to read about the committee “revision” plan. It seems to me the committees are a great tool to help the board make good decisions and that is what they were originally designed to be. Maybe they just need to be better run, more clear on the ite...

  • View from the North 40: O vent pipe, vent pipe, wherefore art thou, vent pipe?

    Pam Burke|Updated Apr 21, 2023

    1. “The vent pipe is not regarded as lost until you realize it’s lost” — Mehmet Murat Ildan. The vent ducting had to be installed on the range hood before any other major progress could be made on the house project. Of course, this was both simple and problematic. Welcome to my world. We — mostly my husband, John — had gotten to the point that everything was there, in place, ready to go — except one 10-inch piece of vent pipe. So close, but it was gone. Lost? Mistakenly us...

  • Looking out my Backdoor: This is the way we wash our clothes

    Sondra Ashton|Updated Apr 21, 2023

This is the way we wash our clothes, early Monday morning. Mid-cycle, my washing machine quit working. I mean quit. Dead in the water. I mean, dead, full of water and soggy clothes. The machine gave up, quit, somewhere in rinse cycle. So I had to swish and wring the entire soggy mess out by hand and pin everything on the line, slightly drippy. I knew the clothing would dry quickly, afternoons hang out in the high 80s or lower 90s these days. The day the machine quit, my...

  • Out Our Way: I know You! - Luke 24:13-35

    Updated Apr 21, 2023

Out our way, horses are less often pets than work partners. I enjoyed riding "Doc" on various trails. But he and I bonded on the Tiger Ridge working Big Mike's herd with Charlie. I think he enjoyed it as he was usually eager for the bit and never seemed to mind me saddling him up (except when his cinch and my belt were tight due to a lazy winter). Now, the place where I kept Doc had other horses and they tended to stick together. "Babe," that gorgeous sorrel paint who was...

  • Pastor's Corner: Delayed gratification

    Updated Apr 21, 2023

(Please read Habakkuk 3:1-19) In Habakkuk 2:2-3, God asks his prophet to record a vision of a future day - a day when the Lord will respond to injustice. Habakkuk 2:4 spells out that we are to live until that day "by faith," not by sight. Habakkuk 3:3-15 reveals the content of the vision. Habakkuk is deeply changed; his response in 3:16-19 clearly illustrates what it means to live by faith in God's promises. After a moment's recuperation from the cosmic events that he has...

  • Hello, God. It's me, Mara.

    Updated Apr 21, 2023

You know, Lord, sometimes unexpected things come together in surprising ways. "Miss Emy" was delighted about Easter and how her family really liked John 8:12, a verse Jesus told his followers, before the Resurrection. She recited it: "When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, 'I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.'" She changed the subject then, talking about her company, which was mostly family,...
