  • April showers? More like snow showers

    George Fergson|Updated May 7, 2020

Summer is coming, even if spring hasn’t completely felt like spring. And, certainly, April didn’t feel like spring. Earlier this week, the National Weather Service in Great Falls released its April weather summary, as well as a summer for north-central Montana with data compiled from last October through April. And two things about April stood out for Havre. The first was, in a relatively short window, it snowed a lot in April. Havre received 11.1 inches of snow for the month, with a normal April seeing just 3.0 inches fal...

The weather is warming up, and in some areas of Montana, that's going to mean the springtime fishing will get good. And that includes at Fresno Reservoir west of Havre. Sondra Ashton|Updated May 7, 2020

Though not the least bit dangerous, Argentine Ants win the grand prize for pesky, irritating, prolific and impossible to be squashed with any permanence. You in the North Country don’t have to worry about them. So far they have learned to inhabit only tropical and sub-tropical climes. I say ‘so far’. Adaptable little creatures they are. They neither bite with fire nor leave welts. They don’t strip entire trees overnight. They don’t chew the furniture. However, one this mome...

  • Letter to the Editor - What is up with the park board?

    Updated May 7, 2020

Editor, What the heck is going on with the Hill County Park Board? I have noticed the ongoing discussions about the beaver problem in the park, and am dumbfounded as to why the park board members cannot agree to try any other methods for beaver control. The controversy about trapping versus using non-lethal devices to control the beaver population is not an either-or situation. Maybe both methods are needed — maybe not — but nothing will be gained if they don’t agree to move forward and try to find a better solution. There...
