The friends, Ron Hellman and Jerry Engleson, are now housing, between them, more than 700 high school yearbooks, Hellman said. In 1991, Hellman said, he found out that the high school was going to throw out all the extra old annuals it had because of a lack of storage space. Remembering Engleson's dad had a collection of annuals, helped him come up with the idea to...

  • View from the North 40: Literary analysis of conflict 101

    Pam Burke|Updated Jul 13, 2018

On days we feel the world has too much conflict, it’s good to remember that literary-minded folks, who are rarely good for practical things, remind us that conflict is good because it inspires passion about ideas, people and things. A story without conflict is just a boring list of details — and then everybody dies. The following news stories illustrate the literary nerds’ five types of conflict. Man vs. Self An 82-year-old man in India had his record-length finge...

  • Letters to the Editor - Support 6-mill levy

    Updated Jul 13, 2018

Editor, This November, voters are going to be faced with a choice: whether or not to continue supporting a tradition that helps the students and future leaders of Montana. The 6-mill levy was first passed in 1948 and has been on a 10 — year renewal cycle with passing margins becoming slimmer. This trend is not reversing in 2018 and if the levy is not passed it will hurt Montana students. The 6-mill levy is not a new tax and it is not increasing. I know that many voters throughout the state feel a burden when it comes to p...

  • Grief Poem - Wind and Blue Sky

    Updated Jul 13, 2018

Blue sky with clouds, our heart does ache, ‘Life’ doesn’t seem quite fair. The wind does blow but we hang tight and up to Heaven we stare. We do know this about You, Lord, You’ll ever be our song. King of my heart, You are so good, for You, Oh, Lord, are strong. A song, dear Lord, says that you’re King, the King who fills my heart. We run to You when our heart aches, from us, You’ll never part. And when night comes and it’s so dark, we know You’re holding on, You’re never gonna let me down; come noon or night or dawn. Some da...

  • Hello, God. It's me, Mara

    Updated Jul 13, 2018

You know, Lord, summer is in the air! There’s no doubt that nearly everyone we know feels like it’s a wonderful time to take some time off, be it just to relax or recharge. We know some dear friends who are doing just that! They have some great ideas to see parks, lakes, family, or just travel around a bit. Other friends don’t feel like buzzing around, but they also know how refreshing it is to take a bit of ‘time’ off just to set aside a few minutes each day to do something that they love to do, be it weeding, quilting,...

  • Pastor's Corner: Seeds, seeds and more seeds

    Updated Jul 13, 2018

I’ve been enjoying Pastor Kevin Barsotti’s columns on reaping and sowing, Biblical financial principles, etc. We just finished a series of messages at our church on some related topics, and I want to offer some thoughts about seeds that I hope will complement Kevin’s recent columns and not be redundant. First, seeds are very important to God. All kinds of seeds. When God created the earth, He created all living things to produce after their own kind, through seeds (see the first few chapters of Genesis). Then God’s origina...

  • Out Our Way: What a maroon!

    Updated Jul 13, 2018

Out our way, we have seen more than our share of fools. Sometimes they are harmless — like the guy from New York who bought spurs and wanted to wear them in town. Not surprisingly, he hooked himself and tripped to the enjoyment of the rest. Or the guy who wanted to use a dressing room to try on chaps because he didn’t know they went on over the jean and not instead of the jeans. Today I was a similar fool. I took my son Nate to Colorado Mesa University to look into enrolling in their film school. Now their nickname is “th...
