  • Another big weekend at home for the Northstars

    Kason Clark|Updated May 14, 2021

After a two-week hiatus, the Havre Northstars American Legion baseball club returns to Legion Field this Sunday to play a doubleheader. The Northstars started the season undefeated but got swept by the Bitterroot Bucs in a doubleheader the last time they played. Havre hopes their two-week break has allowed them to improve in order to rebound against the Glasgow Reds and Helena Reps this weekend. "We've had a couple weeks to recover from that and we've had a couple good weeks...

The federal government has changed the face of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States,, with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention saying Thursday that people who are fully vaccinated don’t need to wear masks most of the time. “Well, today is a great day for America in our long battle with the coronavirus,” President Joe Biden said from the Rose Garden Thursday after CDC issued its new guidance. Until more was known about the effectiveness of vaccines and the chance of vaccinated people transmitting the virus, CDC h...

  • Anti-beaver-trapping billboard draws eyes, as controversy continues

    Patrick Johnston|Updated May 14, 2021

As local conflict over the future of beaver population management in Beaver Creek Park continues, a billboard sponsored by Trap Free Montana Public Lands has been set up on U.S. Highway 2 at the east end of town. The Hill County Park Board's Rules and Regulations Committee has been holding a series of meetings meant to gauge the public's opinion on the long-controversial issue of beaver trapping, which some argue is the only efficient way of controlling beaver populations in...

That’s all, really. So we’re looking for some funding at the moment to maybe stabilize the bank, so it doesn’t slough off any closer,” Wastewater Treatment Plant Manager Eric Miller said. Greg Jergeson, a member of the state St. Mary Rehabilitation Working Group looki...

  • Letter to the Editor - Why an anti-trapping billboard here now?

    Updated May 14, 2021

Editor, Hopefully most of the citizenry of Havre have become aware of the billboard along the highway east of Havre. If not, please check it out. The billboard was paid for by an anti-trapping organization, “Trap Free Montana Public Lands” based in Hamilton. Their anti-trapping activity has been concentrated mostly in the western part of the state. It seems coincidentally suspicious that a billboard with a message to “Protect Beaver” appears in Havre while meetings addressing the management of beaver in Beaver Creek Park th...

  • View from the North 40: Just be sure to slap a slogan on it

    Pam Burke|Updated May 14, 2021

We’ve all got answers to life’s problems, but they ain’t all interesting, so today I want to talk a little bit about innovative solutions. Remember the Suez Canal fiasco a few months ago when a ship captain accidentally grounded a cargo ship against the canal’s soft, sandy bank and the waterway was blocked for six days? (Side note: I thought the entire canal was lined with concrete but, obviously, I am not well-read or attentive to news from 2004 and 2006 when this happene...

  • Better connected under the Big Sky

    Updated May 14, 2021

Jason Ellsworth of Hamilton and passed the Montana Legislature overwhelmingly. This new law leverages $275 million in federal money available through the American Rescue Plan Act to expand br...

  • Out Our Way: The coyote knows - Zechariah 2:8-9

    Updated May 14, 2021

Out our way, except for a few mountain lions, I saw very few predators on the Tiger Ridge. The land is fenced and the herds are pretty large. I have seen an angry cow or two stamping her feet and shaking her head before charging a cowhand who annoyed her calf, so I suppose coyotes steer clear. But back in the Wyoming sandhills, the herd was small and fewer fences. Coyotes tended to abound out there and while mama remained mama, occasionally a calf would get taken. A friend of...

  • Hello, God. It's me, Mara.

    Updated May 14, 2021

You know, Lord, the cloud formations, from our point of view here on our hilltop, are breathtaking! We do need rain in our area. One minute it looks like rain clouds bounding over the horizon; a bit later, the sun is bursting through again in a teasing way. The rain drops are so few and far between in our particular area and the valley of trees below really do need a wash job. So glad You are in charge of the weather, Lord, and that You can handle that job. That would be quite...
