Since Dec. 19, a crew from the Montana Department of Transportation has been trimming branches away from power lines, street lights and the road, and they have left some of the trees almost completely bare. Montana Department of Transportation said they are doing what has to be done to the trees, damaged by the record-setting blizzard that hit the area Oct. 2-3, 2017. • Hi-Line Athlete Profile: Ethan Roberts, Havre Hockey

    Chris Peterson|Updated Dec 27, 2018

There is no question about it, when it comes to multi-sport athletes along the Hi-Line, Havre's Ethan Roberts is one of the best. Roberts, who plays three sports: Baseball, football and hockey, has been making his mark in all three activities over the past couple of years, but right now, the senior has been spending all of his athletic time on the ice, for the Havre Ice Hawks and so far this season, Roberts is off to a spectacular start. Roberts has always been known for his s...

  • Chris Peterson Column: I'll always remember 2018 because of the Blue Pony girls

    Chris Peterson|Updated Dec 27, 2018

It’s absolutely insane that 2019 is just a few days away. This year, like so many others, has just flown by and I am betting the next year will go by even faster than the last. That just seems to be the way the world works. Maybe that is why as one year ends, we tend to look back at what happened in the previous year, over 365 days, seemingly before we can move onto the next one. Well, when I look back at 2018 from a local sports perspective, there is really only one thing t...

  • Letter to the Editor - A letter to U.S. Sen. Steve Daines, R-Mont.

    Updated Dec 27, 2018

Arthur Eugene Beckes sent a letter to Sen. Steve Daines Dec. 21 and allowed the Havre Daily News to reprint it here Sen. Daines, The Trump administration has lost Jim Mattis, a reasonable man in a post that absolutely requires reason. If this doesn’t alarm you, it should. Big numbers of competent people will no longer consider working with the misfit in the White House, as you are aware. Why would they? The closer anyone gets to this excuse for a leader, the more likely they are to get burned. So our nation is in a q...

  • Letter to the Editor - Tree topping not acceptable

    Updated Dec 27, 2018

Editor, Tree topping, or removing a major part of a large tree’s crown by cutting branches to stubs or to the trunk — see photo on the front page of the Havre Daily News 12-20 paper — is never an acceptable part of proper tree maintenance. If this is what is necessary, then the tree should be removed. Topping severely injures and infects trees, sometimes killing them outright. Topping also increases rapid regrowth which is weakly attached and more susceptible to storm and wind damage. Trees that have been carelessly toppe...

  • Looking out my Backdoor: Endings and beginnings

    Sondra Ashton|Updated Dec 27, 2018

Christmas has been celebrated. The first day of the New Year lurks around the corner. We arbitrarily close out one year, stamp it “over and done” and with trepidation open the flaps of the box labeled, “next.” The one thing, the only thing, I can say with certainty, is this: Nothing, absolutely nothing, will come about, unfold, or happen the way I think it will. Just by consistently getting up each morning I have lived long and I have learned that I don’t know much. Jim recen...
