Summer reading program generates lots of reading

"Join the Winners Circle read!" was the theme for the children's summer reading program.

The Friends of the Havre-Hill County Library sponsored the program and purchased 168 trophies for all the participants who reached their reading goal. The 350 children who registered and participated in the summer reading program read 199,744 minutes or a total of 139 days.

Between June 9 and July 31, the summer readers checked out and read 8,080 books from the children's section of the Havre-Hill County Library.

Congratulations to all the summer readers, especially to the 168 trophy winners and to the top readers in the four different ages groups.

Kylie Coram read together with her family 3,030 minutes to be the top reader in her age group of 0-3 years. Maggie Hodges read 6,510 minutes to be the top reader in her age group of 4-7 years. Meagan Morelli read 15,700 minutes to be the top reader in her age group of 8-10 years. Ben Kolis read 6,540 minutes to be the top reader in his age group of 11-beyond years.

Bear Paw Credit Union, Independence Bank, Wells Fargo Bank and Friends of the Library donated $500 savings bonds for the top readers. The Dairy Queen donated ice cream to all the participants of the bug race. Havre Cinema Theaters 1 and 2 donated coupons to all the readers who reached their reading goals.

Bill Chambers, a local storyteller, was sponsored by the Montana Committee of the Humanities to perform at the summer reading wrap-up program. Chambers was the author of the stories he told to an audience of more than 200 parents, grandparents and their readers.

This successful summer reading program could not have been possible without the support of the Friends of the Havre-Hill County Library, the parents, the readers, the Montana Committee for the Humanities, the local businesses listed above and the Havre-Hill County Library staff with a special thank you to Carrie Wilson the children's librarian.
